11 Years Later, We Finally Know Why Kong’s Skull Island Matters to the Monsterverse

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters reveals why Skull Island is so crucial to the Monsterverse. This remote island, located in the Pacific Ocean, is a hotspot for massive creatures known as Titans and other enormous wildlife. Surrounded by dangerous storms and largely unexplored, Skull Island is a perilous place, even for the experienced organization known as Monarch, who must proceed with caution.

As a huge fan of the MonsterVerse, I’ve always wondered what makes Skull Island so special. The novel for Kong: Skull Island suggested it might be a piece of the Hollow Earth that somehow surfaced, bringing its strange creatures and environment with it. There was even a little hint in the credits of Monarch Season 2 that the island actually dips back into the Hollow Earth sometimes, though we didn’t know why. But finally, the Season 2 finale of Monarch gives us the answer – it all makes sense now!

Skull Island is Grand Central Station

Bill Randa believed that Titans move around using a system of portals they can create whenever they want. These portals are the same as the dangerous whirlpools described in Monsterverse stories, and they stretch all over the world. They lead to a mysterious place called the Axis Mundi – a realm between our world and the Hollow Earth – where time seems to work differently, and even time travel might be possible. Scientists haven’t yet figured out why these portals appear in certain places, or why we can’t create them ourselves, even with advanced technology or by using a Titan.

You know, my friend Bill was totally right about this whole network of rifts. But what really blew my mind was his theory about a central point – a kind of Grand Central Station for them all. He figured every rift connected back to Skull Island, and it makes sense – apparently, reality is super fragile there. He even found this central rift, the main hub, but tragically, he didn’t make it out alive while he was investigating. It’s a real shame, because he was onto something huge.

This reveals the secret behind Skull Island’s unique nature. It’s the most accessible place for colossal creatures, or Titans, to appear, and they can use a special rift to return to their home – the Hollow Earth, through a central point called the Axis Mundi. Because of this rift, anything transported from other dimensions could end up on Skull Island, which explains the incredible variety of giant animals found there. There truly is nowhere else on Earth like it… or is there?

Is There Anywhere Else Like Skull Island?

Skull Island seems to be connected to a larger, worldwide pattern, which leads to the possibility of another similar place existing somewhere else on Earth. Considering its location in the South Pacific, a mirrored location would likely be in the Atlantic Ocean, near West Africa – potentially even on the underwater Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This could also explain why it hasn’t been discovered yet, as much of the ridge is very deep and remains largely unexplored.

This is all speculation, but it follows logically from what we learned in Monarch Season 2. What we do know for certain is that Bill Randa was right: Skull Island is a central hub – likely the most important one – for monster activity across the entire Monsterverse.

So, I just finished watching Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and I’m really curious to hear what everyone else thought! Head over to the ComicBook Forum and let’s chat about it – I’m eager to get your take!
