The incredibly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe nearly didn’t happen, almost ending twelve years ago. As the franchise approaches its 20th anniversary, people often discuss how it revolutionized Hollywood. It became the model for other studios trying to create successful franchises, but so far, nothing has matched its impact, even with recent challenges in the Multiverse Saga. Despite changes to the cast and crew, Kevin Feige and his team are still working to build on the MCU’s impressive history.
Marvel Studios’ first major storyline, known as the Infinity Saga, was a remarkably successful series of films. It’s often considered a high point for superhero movies, beginning with Captain America: Civil War and culminating in Avengers: Endgame, with Spider-Man: No Way Home serving as a final chapter. Key moments like the cultural impact of Black Panther and the epic conclusion of the saga with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame cemented the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s place in film history. However, it’s easy to forget how close we came to not getting those films – and the rest of that defining era – at all.
Kevin Feige Almost Left Marvel Studios Ahead Of Captain America: Civil War

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, almost left the Marvel Cinematic Universe while planning Captain America: Civil War. It’s hard to believe, given how dedicated he’s been to the franchise, that he considered leaving, especially when Marvel seemed unstoppable. The reason? A disagreement with Ike Perlmutter, then chairman of Marvel Entertainment. At the time, Marvel Studios was a part of the larger Marvel Entertainment, meaning Feige had to report to Perlmutter. They clashed because Perlmutter focused on reducing costs, while Feige wanted to invest in his creative vision for the MCU.
Kevin Feige faced strong opposition from Perlmutter when he wanted Robert Downey Jr. to return as Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War. Perlmutter, concerned about Downey Jr.’s high salary and the film’s large cast, argued against the idea, almost causing Feige to leave Marvel Studios. Fortunately, Disney president Bob Iger intervened in May 2015, restructuring Marvel Entertainment. This change placed Feige and Louis D’Esposito in charge of the entire franchise, with them reporting directly to Disney Chairman Alan Horn, bypassing Perlmutter.
What The MCU Would Have Become Without Kevin Feige

Bob Iger’s support was key to getting the Russo brothers to direct Captain America: Civil War, which turned out to be a very successful move for Disney and Marvel. The film cost around $250 million to produce but earned over $1.155 billion worldwide. Beyond being a critical and commercial success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Civil War perfectly set the stage for the concluding films of the Infinity Saga. It notably introduced Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther and Tom Holland as Spider-Man, both of whom became crucial characters in the subsequent Avengers movies. The conflict between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, established in Civil War, was essential to setting up Thanos’s attack and victory in Avengers: Infinity War.
If Kevin Feige had stepped down and Isaac Perlmutter had gotten his way, the changes to Captain America: Civil War would have significantly impacted the entire Infinity Saga. A smaller, self-contained third Captain America movie – potentially featuring the Serpent Society – wouldn’t have properly set the stage for the epic conclusion of the MCU’s first major storyline. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame could have been drastically different, and it’s disappointing to think the Infinity Saga might have ended on a less satisfying note instead of being the success it was.
Beyond any potential creative setbacks, Kevin Feige leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have created a major public relations problem and likely impacted the talent involved. Disney faced a similar situation when James Gunn was unexpectedly fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which caused a huge uproar and ultimately led them to reverse their decision. Because Feige was so closely associated with the MCU, the fallout from his departure would have been even more significant. Fortunately, the situation was resolved before it became a crisis.
