Readers initially thought the story took place in ancient China, but the author clarified that it’s actually set in a period closer to the early modern era – roughly 1000 years ago, similar to Japan’s Edo period and after. They feel the term ‘ancient’ is inaccurate, and even ‘Middle Ages’ doesn’t quite fit the timeframe of the series.

She admitted to taking the most compelling elements from a millennium of Chinese history and creatively reassembling them to tell her own story.
