I’ve always loved SyFy because they’re willing to take risks on really unique sci-fi and fantasy shows that other networks would never touch. It’s hit or miss – sometimes they create a huge phenomenon, and sometimes a show just doesn’t work out. But what really gets me is when a promising series gets stuck in a weird place – it’s not quite a hit, but it doesn’t get canceled either, and then it just fades away, which is a shame when it had potential.
Thirteen years ago today, SyFy launched a unique Western series. It’s set on Earth after a devastating war with aliens has completely changed the planet. The last major human settlement is meant to be a place where humans and aliens can live together peacefully, as long as the sheriff keeps the peace. But maintaining order proves incredibly difficult in a town filled with wealthy, feuding families, a corrupt government, and residents involved in secret schemes that could restart the war.
SyFy’s Defiance Was Taken Out Too Soon

The sci-fi western series Defiance debuted on SyFy on April 15, 2013. The show follows Joshua Nolan, played by Grant Bowler (known from Lost, Ugly Betty, and True Blood), who arrives at Fort Defiance—what used to be St. Louis—with his adopted daughter, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas). Irisa is one of the Votans, an alien race, and the pair quickly become involved in a murder investigation. They’re trying to help the town’s new mayor, Amanda Rosewater (played by Julie Benz from Dexter), who may be in danger. After Nolan—a former hero of the “Battle of Defiance” and skilled hunter—prevents an attack that would have destroyed the town, he’s made the town’s lawkeeper, with Irisa as his deputy.
I followed Defiance when it first came out, and while it didn’t become a huge hit right away – it started with around 2.7 million viewers – it generally stayed between 1.5 and 2 million each week during its first season. The finale brought it back up to around 2 million. By season two, the numbers dipped to about 1.5 million, and by season three, it was closer to 1 million. Interestingly, about a million more people would usually watch it later using their DVRs. It never became a ‘must-watch’ show for a lot of people, but it really built a dedicated fanbase who loved it, and that’s where it stayed.

The creators of Defiance – Rockne S. O’Bannon, Kevin Murphy (known for Desperate Housewives), and Michael Taylor (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Voyager) – built an incredibly detailed and complex sci-fi world. There was enough material for the show to have lasted many more seasons and even grown into a larger franchise, like Star Trek or Stargate, with prequels, sequels, and spin-offs. Some of the biggest complaints about Defiance were that the world-building was too intricate, making it hard for even dedicated sci-fi fans to fully understand and enjoy. Considering the success of expansive franchises like Game of Thrones and Apple TV’s Foundation (which adapted Isaac Asimov’s complex novels into a TV series), Defiance now feels like it was simply ahead of its time.
The cast of Defiance includes Tony Curran (known for Underworld: Evolution), Jamie Murray (Gotham), Graham Greene (Dances With Wolves), Mia Kirshner (The L Word, 24), Jesse Rath (Supergirl), James Murray (Masters of the Air), Anna Hopkins (Shadowhunters, The Expanse), and Nichole Galicia. The show also features guest and recurring appearances by Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), Lee Tergesen (Weird Science), William Atherton (Ghostbusters), Noah Danby (Shadowhunters, Stargate: SG-1), and a number of other talented actors.
