Pixar, known for beloved Disney franchises like Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Cars, is adding to the world of Monsters, Inc. This franchise already includes two successful movies and two seasons of a popular animated series. Although the series premiered in 2024, fans haven’t seen a new Monsters, Inc. movie since Monsters University in 2013. Now, after 13 years, Pixar is finally creating Monsters Inc. 3.
A recent report from The Wall Street Journal details changes in Pixar’s leadership and how that’s influencing their move towards making more sequels and focusing on established franchises. The report mentions upcoming sequels like Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and Coco 2, and also reveals that Pixar is working on a third Monsters, Inc. movie – which would be fantastic if true.
Monsters Inc. Is Getting a Long-Awaited Sequel (And Hopefully It’s in the Present)

Pixar’s 2023 film, Monsters University, brought back the beloved characters Sulley and Mike Wazowski, but it told their origin story – how they met and became friends. This means we haven’t actually seen a true sequel to Monsters, Inc. yet.
Pixar could continue the story of Monsters, Inc. with a third film, picking up where the original left off. We last saw Sulley as the head of the monster world and Mike thriving as a comedian, while Boo was happily living her life. A new movie could jump forward in time and show us what’s happened to all of them since then.
A road trip with Mike, Sulley, and Boo into the human world could be really fun. Whether Boo is a young child or a teenager, it would create great opportunities for character development and a classic road trip adventure.
Both Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University were big hits in theaters, earning over $255 million and $268 million respectively. Considering the success of recent Disney and Pixar sequels like Inside Out 2, a third Monsters, Inc. movie is likely to be a major success when it’s released.
We should hear more about the Monsters, Inc. project soon, which is great news! Seeing more of Mike and Sulley together is always a fun experience.
