Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 5-6
The latest episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord are available now on Disney+, and fans have been spotting lots of hidden details, nods to Star Wars, and interesting links within them.
The latest episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord (5-6) show the Galactic Empire arriving on Janix after Two-Boots foolishly requested assistance. An Imperial Inquisitor is now in charge of the search for Maul, and Imperial officers have taken control of the local police. Although the situation is much more dangerous, the Empire’s arrival actually helps Maul. He now shares a common enemy with Devon Izara, allowing him to position himself as a valuable ally to the young Jedi survivor.
These recent episodes are packed with fun details and references for fans to discover. Here are 15 of the most significant Easter eggs, nods to Star Wars, and important connections we spotted in Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 5 and 6.
“Inquisition”
The title of Maul – Shadow Lord episode 5 is perfect – it really matches what’s happening now that an Imperial Inquisitor is actively hunting both Maul and the Jedi on Janix.
The Empire Is Still Using Republic Gunships
With the Empire spreading its forces throughout the city, it’s clear they’re still using older equipment from the Clone Wars, like the Republic’s LAAT/i Gunships. Considering the Galactic Republic only became the Galactic Empire about a year ago in the Star Wars timeline, this isn’t surprising.
Early TK Stormtrooper Armor
The series also features stormtroopers wearing an older version of the iconic white armor seen in the original Star Wars movies. This earlier design first appeared in The Bad Batch, which is set during the Empire’s initial years.
“She’ll Make An Excellent Apprentice”
In the fifth episode of Shadow Lord, Rook Kast is puzzled by Maul’s continued interest in Devon, especially after she tried to kill him. Maul, however, was impressed by her effort, believing it showed she’d be a strong apprentice. This aligns with Sith tradition, where apprentices are expected to try and overthrow their masters as a demonstration of their power in the dark side of the Force.
Marrok Finally Speaks
The First Brother, also known as Marrok, was introduced in the 2023 series Ahsoka during the New Republic period, but he initially appeared as a reanimated corpse thanks to Morgan Elsbeth’s magic. Throughout the live-action show, he only spoke one short line, responding to Shin Hati’s commands with a simple “as you wish.”
Marrok appears for the first time in Shadow Lord as an Imperial Inquisitor who is still alive. He’s investigating what Maul is up to and fights both Maul and the Jedi who are still alive. These new Star Wars episodes also give us a chance to hear Marrok speak more than just a few lines, and we can expect to see even more of him in the remaining four episodes of Shadow Lord.
“You’ve Seen Our Identification”
Master Daki and Devon try to sneak onto a train using the famous Jedi mind trick Obi-Wan Kenobi used in A New Hope. It doesn’t quite work, though – one of the guards figures out what they’re doing, even though his partner is fooled.
Maul Practicing His Lightsaber Forms (Juyo)
The sixth episode of Shadow Lord opens with Maul demonstrating his skill with a lightsaber, smoothly transitioning between different stances and techniques. Officially, Maul’s fighting style is Juyo, also called Form VII or the Ferocity Form. This aggressive style was later banned by the Jedi, but Sith Lords often preferred it because it allowed them to use their emotions to gain an advantage in combat.
As a big Star Wars fan, I always thought Starkiller from The Force Unleashed games was seriously impressive. It turns out he was trained in Form VII, which is cool, but what’s even cooler is that Sam Witwer – who voiced him – was actually the first character in Star Wars to be voiced by him! Now he’s known as the voice of Darth Maul, which just shows how much talent he brings to the galaxy far, far away.
Botekin
Rylee Lawson has finally named the game seen in The Phantom Menace – it’s called “botekin.” Fans have been wondering about the name of this game, which features a stick and ball, ever since it appeared in Anakin Skywalker’s room when he showed C-3PO around to Padmé, 27 years ago.
Early Generation AT-ST
The visual guide Maul – Shadow Lord features some of the first designs for the iconic Imperial AT-ST walkers. Their appearance confirms the Empire is taking the search for Maul on Janix very seriously and is prepared to use significant force.
Two-Boots’ Name Origin Revealed
An Imperial officer scolded Two-Boots for wearing boots that didn’t follow the rules for droids, explaining how he got the nickname ‘Two-Boots’ – it wasn’t just part of his model number, 2B0T.
