17-Year-Old Cult Classic Is Officially a Top 10 Netflix Hit (& a Sequel Is Finally Happening)

Megan Fox became a major Hollywood star in the late 2000s after appearing in the blockbuster film Transformers. Shortly after its success in 2007, she took on a very different project: the 2009 comedy horror Jennifer’s Body. In the film, Fox plays Jennifer Check, a popular high school student who becomes possessed and starts killing the boys at her school. When it was first released, Jennifer’s Body didn’t receive much attention. Critics were divided, and it didn’t perform well in theaters, earning $31.5 million worldwide on a $16 million budget. However, over time, the film has gained a following and is now popular on streaming services.

From May 4th to 10th, Jennifer’s Body ranked as the 6th most popular movie on Netflix worldwide. It was viewed 3 million times, totaling 5.1 million hours of watch time. It outperformed films like Mother’s Day and The Proposal to reach the top 10, marking its first appearance on the chart.

Nearly Two Decades Later, Jennifer’s Body Is Finally Getting a Sequel

Though it wasn’t initially successful, Jennifer’s Body has become a beloved cult classic, especially after the #MeToo movement. Many now see it as a powerful feminist film, telling the story of a young woman exploited by men seeking fame and who ultimately takes her revenge. Since its re-evaluation, fans have been eager for a sequel, and it seems one is finally in the works. Director Karyn Kusama revealed last year that writer Diablo Cody is currently developing the script for Jennifer’s Body 2.

We don’t have many details yet about the plot, when production will start, or when we can expect to see Jennifer’s Body 2. It might take a while before the sequel actually happens. The speed at which the script is written will be key, and the writer, Cody, should take as much time as necessary to get it right. It’s important not to rush the process and risk disappointing fans of the original, especially now that Jennifer’s Body is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. The sequel will need to be as exciting and unforgettable as the first film.

20th Century Studios seems to have learned from the mistakes made with the first Jennifer’s Body movie. The original film didn’t do well in theaters, partly because the marketing focused too much on Megan Fox’s appearance and tried to attract young men. This time, the studio should better understand who the real fans are – the women who turned the first movie into a cult hit – and create ads that appeal to them. That could lead to a much more successful release for Jennifer’s Body 2.

Just because a movie becomes a beloved cult classic doesn’t guarantee its sequel will be a blockbuster. For example, Blade Runner 2049 didn’t perform well at the box office despite receiving great reviews, even though the first Blade Runner is considered a landmark science fiction film. However, it’s understandable why the studio is giving Jennifer’s Body 2 a try. The original film still has a dedicated fanbase, suggesting there’s definitely an audience for a sequel.
