17 Years Ago Today, A Classic 2000s Sitcom Ended on a Frustrating Cliffhanger (We Still Want Answers)

One of the biggest sitcom hits of the 2000s was My Name Is Earl, which first aired on NBC in 2005. The show quickly won over viewers with its unusual combination of a down-to-earth, working-class setting and surprisingly thoughtful themes. It followed Earl Hickey (Jason Lee), a small-time criminal who has a change of heart and decides to make amends for all his past wrongs by creating a list and trying to fix them. Earl became an unexpected symbol of turning your life around, and his journey took place in the quirky town of Camden County alongside his goofy but devoted brother, Randy (Ethan Suplee). The show skillfully balanced humor with heartfelt moments, earning praise from critics and winning several Emmy Awards for its clever writing and talented cast.

Exactly 17 years ago today, on May 14, 2009, the TV show My Name Is Earl unexpectedly ended. The final episode of Season 4, called “Dodge’s Dad,” was meant to start a new direction for the show’s long-running storyline about the Hickey family. In it, Earl learns he’s actually Dodge’s biological father – a son Joy previously believed was from a one-night stand. The same DNA tests also revealed that Darnell wasn’t Earl Jr.’s father, completely changing a key relationship on the show. The episode ended with a “To be Continued” message as the characters reacted in shock at the hospital, but NBC cancelled the show before they could solve the paternity mystery in a fifth season.

My Name Is Earl Got Cancelled Due to a Licensing Dispute

Although ratings for Season 4 of My Name Is Earl were a little lower than their highest point, the show was still doing well enough to usually get renewed – it even beat out popular shows like Community in viewership. Unfortunately, the series was canceled not because of low ratings, but due to issues between NBC and 20th Century Fox Television, the studio that made the show. Ethan Suplee later revealed that NBC was initially interested in another season, but Fox tried to ask for more money. This caused a two-week standoff where NBC stopped communicating with Fox. By the time Fox agreed to stick with the original deal, NBC had already decided to use the time slot for other shows, ending the series over a small financial dispute.

It’s particularly disappointing that My Name Is Earl was cancelled because the show’s creator, Greg Garcia, already had a solid plan for how it would end. He later explained that the final season’s cliffhanger was meant to set up a storyline where Earl faced his toughest challenge yet. The ending would have involved Earl meeting someone with their own list of wrongs, who was actually inspired by Earl’s efforts to make amends. This would have allowed Earl to finally destroy his list, realizing his positive impact on others far exceeded his past mistakes. Unfortunately, fans didn’t get this satisfying conclusion and were instead left with unanswered questions, which the show’s creators briefly acknowledged in other projects.

As a big fan of My Name Is Earl, I was always a little bummed about the show ending so abruptly. Thankfully, Greg Garcia, the creator, gave us a little something extra in the pilot of his next show, Raising Hope. There’s this quick news report about a small-time crook who finally made things right after years of messing up – it felt like a nod to Earl’s journey! But the real treat was when almost the entire Earl cast showed up on Raising Hope. They even did an episode where the characters plotted revenge against a TV executive who cancelled their favorite show – it was a fun way to give the series a bit of closure. Still, even with all that, the mystery of who Earl Jr.’s father actually is? That one remains officially unsolved, which is a little frustrating, but I appreciate the wink to fans!

My Name Is Earl is currently available to stream in its entirety on Hulu and Disney+.
