Marvel Comics has occasionally featured real people in its stories. We saw this subtly when President Barack Obama acknowledged Captain Marvel after the Civil War II storyline. But that wasn’t his only appearance – or even the first! In an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, President Obama appeared while Spider-Man battled one of his classic foes. The story involved Spider-Man protecting the country and ensuring a smooth transfer of power.
Wow, can you believe it’s been 17 years since Spider-Man swung into action and helped save President Obama? It really cemented him as a true American icon for me, and it feels like just yesterday! It’s amazing how much of an impact that moment had.
Spider-Man Saves the U.S. President from The Chameleon
As a big Spider-Man fan, I remember issue #583, which came out in January 2009. It was written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Barry Kitson, and it actually contained two separate stories. The first one, called “Platonic,” was a really charming story about Peter and his friend Betty. It started with Spider-Man fighting this really forgettable villain, Kilgore – honestly, he was just a copycat of Lex Luthor in a suit of armor! Then it shifted gears to Betty trying to set Peter up on a bunch of speed dates, which, predictably, didn’t go well. It was a sweet story about their friendship, but it wasn’t the main reason I remember that issue so fondly.
A special bonus story featured Spider-Man rescuing President Barack Obama. Written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by Todd Nauck, the story also brought back Spider-Man’s original enemy, the Chameleon. The plot revolved around Inauguration Day, but became complicated when a duplicate Obama appeared, leaving the Secret Service unsure of who was genuine. Spider-Man quickly identified the real president by having someone ask a question only Obama could answer.
The Chameleon had a funny idea: he thought he could sneak into the presidential inauguration, pretend to be Barack Obama, and actually become the President! Obama joked that the Chameleon clearly didn’t understand how elections work. A simple fist-bump from Obama brightened Spider-Man’s day. Surprisingly, President Obama appeared or was referenced in Marvel Comics a remarkable 46 times, showing up in storylines like Secret Invasion and Siege, as well as issues of Black Panther, The Incredible Hulk, and Avengers. His final comic book appearance was in Captain America: Sam Wilson #19 in 2017.
