18 Years Ago, Doctor Who Introduced 2 of Its Biggest Actors Before Recasting Them in Different Roles

Doctor Who has always been willing to replace actors, and sometimes this change is even woven into the plot. For example, Jenna Coleman first appeared as a new version of her character in the episode “Asylum of the Daleks,” which led to a storyline about her being an elusive and complex companion named Clara. Other times, a new actor is simply brought on because the show’s creators liked their work – Colin Baker initially played a villain who opposed the Doctor before later becoming the Sixth Doctor himself.

A particularly funny moment happened 18 years ago in the David Tennant episode, “The Fires of Pompeii.” In this episode, the Doctor and Donna Noble traveled to ancient Rome and discovered what really caused the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. During their adventure, they also encountered two characters who would later become significant to the show, including one who would eventually become a Doctor himself.

Peter Capaldi Made His Doctor Who Debut 18 Years Ago

Peter Capaldi, who later became the Twelfth Doctor, was a dedicated fan from childhood. He playfully recalled pretending to be the Doctor when he was just nine years old. As a teenager, he passionately tried to become the head of the official Doctor Who Fan Club and relentlessly quizzed the eventual winner about the show’s cast and crew. He once owned a vast collection of Doctor Who books, autographs, and photos, but surprisingly, he got rid of it all, admitting to The Independent that it was a mistake. He joked that he didn’t realize “the geek would inherit the Earth.”

When Peter Capaldi became the Doctor, he immediately addressed the fact that audiences recognized his face from previous roles. He trusted the show would explain it, and it did. Showrunner Steven Moffat cleverly incorporated this into the storyline, revealing the Doctor had unconsciously selected this appearance as a reminder of his core purpose. An earlier episode, “The Fires of Pompeii,” showed the Tenth Doctor breaking the rules of time to save people from the eruption of Pompeii, reinforcing the idea that being the Doctor means prioritizing the rescue of others.

But Capaldi Wasn’t the Only Doctor Who Actor to Debut in This Episode

Peter Capaldi wasn’t the only future star who appeared in “The Fires of Pompeii.” Karen Gillan, who would later become a companion on Doctor Who, also had a small role as a fortune teller. She was able to avoid being recognized because of her heavy makeup. In an interview with The Scotsman, Gillan remembered it being a good introduction to the show, though the producers didn’t connect her performance as a soothsayer to her future role. Surprisingly, the new production team didn’t even recognize her when she auditioned for a larger part.

I remember watching “The Fires of Pompeii” way back in April 2008! It’s funny looking back now, because Karen Gillan wasn’t announced as a companion until over a year later, in May 2009. Then, just a year after that, she was Amy Pond! It’s amazing how quickly she went from a small part to a full-on companion. Peter Capaldi’s journey was a bit different – he didn’t get announced as the Doctor until August 2013, which was five years after Gillan’s initial appearance, even though he was landing the lead role!

Looking back on the episode, “The Fires of Pompeii” is a standard Doctor Who historical adventure, though it doesn’t feature a famous historical figure like some others. It’s interesting to note that the episode stars two actors, Peter Capaldi and Karen Gillan, who later became hugely important to the show. Capaldi went on to play a beloved Doctor, and Gillan is widely considered one of the best companions ever. What’s even more remarkable is that both actors are from Scotland, adding another connection between them. It just goes to show that time and space can work in surprising ways.
