The first look at Avengers: Doomsday, shown at Disney’s CinemaCon, reveals that Doctor Doom is significantly more powerful than Thor. Thor himself states that Doom is the greatest threat he’s ever encountered. The footage supports this claim with an impressive scene of Doom effortlessly stopping Stormbreaker with just two fingers. This moment cleverly highlights the difference between Doom and Thanos, considering Stormbreaker was specifically forged to defeat the Mad Titan.
Just how strong is Doctor Doom, and what allows him to achieve so much? Examining the comics, Doctor Doom and Thor have only directly battled a few times. This is because Doom is a clever strategist who recognizes Asgardians are generally more powerful than he is. He’s noted that while superpowered individuals have abilities, Asgardians are power itself. So, what’s allowing him to accomplish this in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
How Doctor Doom’s Powers Compare to Thor & the Asgardians

A fight between Thor and Doctor Doom might seem very unfair at first. Despite Doom’s intelligence, he’s still just a human. A new book, Marvel Anatomy, explains that Asgardians like Thor are almost three times stronger and tougher than regular people. It says their cells can handle much more energy, which gives many of them powers like shooting energy and controlling the elements. Thor is basically a god, especially when he’s using his magical hammer, Mjolnir.
This comparison only looks at natural abilities, but Doctor Doom is incredibly powerful despite not having superpowers. He’s a master of dark magic, and has even challenged – and temporarily defeated – Doctor Strange to become the Sorcerer Supreme. Doom has studied under history’s most powerful magic users, even traveling through time to uncover ancient secrets like those within the Darkhold. During the Darkhold storyline, he nearly absorbed the mystical power of an Elder God.
Doctor Doom isn’t just a powerful sorcerer; he’s also an incredibly gifted scientist, rivaled only by figures like Reed Richards. This combination allows him to create incredibly advanced technology, capable of even harming powerful beings like Thor. He’s particularly adept at understanding and manipulating energy, demonstrated by his ability to steal life force from Asgardians and his mastery of robotics – he’s even controlled Odin’s Destroyer armor. Ultimately, Doctor Doom is one of the most formidable villains in the Marvel Universe.
How Could Doctor Doom Possibly Take On Thor?

Thor and Doctor Doom haven’t fought each other one-on-one very often, and those fights haven’t usually been fair. For instance, in Thor #182-183, Thor disguised himself as Donald Blake and infiltrated Latveria. Because he needed to physically touch Mjolnir to use its power, Doom exploited this weakness by trapping the hammer with a force field. When they fought again in Thor #600-606, Doom had plenty of time to prepare and even stole Asgardian energy before their final confrontation.
Stealing power is a classic move for Doctor Doom. Throughout his history, he’s consistently targeted and drained the power of anyone he sees as a threat or superior, from incredibly powerful beings like the Beyonder and the Silver Surfer. He’s even tried to take power from entities like the Elder God Chthon, but the Scarlet Witch stopped him. During the 2015 Secret Wars storyline, Doom reached a peak of power, defeating Thanos and becoming a god far beyond even Thor. The version of Doom we’re seeing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems heavily inspired by this powerful portrayal, suggesting we’ll see him at his most formidable.
This isn’t simply a battle between Thor and Doctor Doom. It’s a confrontation with Doom at his absolute peak, wielding the ability to control entire worlds. Considering this immense power, it’s understandable that even Thor’s Stormbreaker wouldn’t be enough to defeat him. In fact, it wouldn’t be shocking if Doom effortlessly absorbed Stormbreaker’s power, demonstrating to Thor just how formidable – and dangerous – he truly is as the MCU’s biggest threat.
