The Howling is getting a fresh perspective.
As a big horror fan, I’ve always loved The Howling. It’s a werewolf movie directed by Joe Dante – the guy who did Gremlins – and it was seriously ahead of its time with the special effects. Rob Bottin did amazing work, and the on-screen transformations were groundbreaking for the era. It’s based on a novel from 1977 and follows a news reporter, played by Dee Wallace, who stumbles upon a hidden community of werewolves. While it didn’t make a huge amount of money when it first came out – around $17.9 million – it’s become a real cult favorite over the years. The cast was great too, with Dee Wallace leading the way alongside Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, Christopher Stone, Belinda Balaski, and Kevin McCarthy.
I was really excited to hear at CinemaCon that they’re actually making a new version of The Howling! StudioCanal announced it, and as a big horror fan, I think it’s fantastic news. Apparently, their new genre division, Sixth Dimension – which is all about horror, thrillers, and sci-fi – is taking the lead on it. It’s great they’re adapting both the book and the original movie, so hopefully, it’ll do the story justice.
Several attempts have been made to remake the classic horror film The Howling. The most recent, The Howling: Reborn (released in 2011), was poorly received, earning only a 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics noted it seemed to intentionally differentiate itself from the Twilight series, but ultimately felt it had little connection to the original Howling story. The film starred Landon Liboiron, Lindsey Shaw, Ivana Milicevic, Jess Rath, and Niels Schneider. There’s also been talk of a new adaptation on Netflix, potentially directed by Andy Muschietti, who directed It.
In 2020, news surfaced that Netflix planned to remake the 1980s horror film The Howling, with director Andy Muschietti at the helm. Muschietti had previously mentioned it was a remake he was particularly interested in. The project would be based on the original novel by Gary Brandner. Muschietti is well-known for his work in horror, having directed the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It, which earned over $700 million worldwide. However, there haven’t been any recent announcements about the status of the Howling remake.

The original 1981 film launched a franchise that continued with seven sequels: Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf (1985), Howling III: The Marsupials (1987), Howling IV: The Original Nightmare (1988), Howling V: The Rebirth (1989), Howling VI: The Freaks (1991), Howling: New Moon Rising (1995), and The Howling: Reborn. However, only the very first film was directed by Joe Dante.
Okay, so as of today, there’s absolutely nothing official out there about the new Howling movie. No release date, no idea who’s going to be in it, and not even a hint of what the story will be about. It’s all still a mystery, which is both exciting and frustrating as a fan!
