A classic Nintendo Entertainment System game from 1986 has quietly launched on both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, bringing back all the original charm. This isn’t a revamped version – it’s the exact same game from 40 years ago. That’s great for players who want an authentic retro experience, and it keeps the price low at just $7.99 on both the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store.
Developer Hamster recently surprised fans by releasing Console Archives Seicross – a new version of the classic Seicross game – for both Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5. This updated version of the original NES shoot ’em up hasn’t been made available on Switch, PS4, PC, or any Xbox consoles, and there are currently no plans to change that.
A Forgotten 1980s Game
Originally created by Alice and published by Nichibutsu, Seicross first appeared in arcades in 1984. It then came to the NES in 1986. For many years, it was only available on the NES, until the original arcade version was released on Nintendo Switch and PS4 in 2021. Now, fans can once again play the classic NES version, as it’s been released on Switch 2 and PS5.
I remember when this game first came out in arcades and on NES – people generally liked it, though it wasn’t a huge blockbuster. It was a standalone game, sadly, so there was never a sequel or anything like that. Honestly, I don’t know if there’s a massive audience for a re-release now, but if you played it back then, either at the arcade or on NES, it’s going to bring back some great memories!
Nichibutsu, the original creator, went out of business in 2015, making it uncertain who currently owns the rights to the game series. Hamster appears to have the rights to publish the original game, or at least a long-term license to do so, but it’s unknown if they control the complete intellectual property. Considering the game is 40 years old, a brand new installment is highly improbable.
