As a huge Marvel fan, I’ll admit the Disney+ shows haven’t always hit the same heights as the movies. But honestly, since WandaVision started things off, we’ve been treated to some really great television. That show is still a standout, and even shows like Loki, Daredevil: Born Again, Wonder Man, and Hawkeye have given us some of the most exciting moments in the MCU. Sure, Secret Invasion was a misstep, and some of the other series have been a bit hit-or-miss, but overall, I’d say the Disney+ Marvel output has been a big win, especially when you include the animated shows!
Two years ago, X-Men ’97 unexpectedly became one of the biggest hits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite some issues during production, the show delivered ten fantastic episodes. While many moments stood out, the fifth episode, “Remember It,” was truly exceptional. It featured a powerful and heartbreaking story about the Sentinels, and finally gave the character Gambit the satisfying arc he deserved after being shortchanged in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The episode’s brilliance—and tragedy—lies in the fact that Gambit had to make the ultimate sacrifice to achieve that redemption.
2 Years Later, I’m Still Not Over X-Men ’97’s “Remember It”

The episode “Remember It” was incredibly powerful. Gambit, heartbroken after Rogue chose Magneto, immediately faced a devastating attack by Master Mold and the Sentinels, resulting in the deaths of thousands of mutants. He then made the ultimate sacrifice to destroy Master Mold, a truly heroic end for such a significant Marvel character. The image of a grief-stricken Rogue holding his lifeless body has stayed with me ever since – and this all happened in an animated episode! The writing was superb, creating a scale of spectacle that would be difficult to achieve in live-action. It was a peak moment that the new X-Men ’97 series will likely struggle to surpass.
All the years of hoping for a great Gambit finally paid off with X-Men ’97. The show acknowledged his troubled past but emphasized his good heart, showing him having left his life of thievery behind and overcoming doubts about his character. The animated series really captured the cool, comic book vibe that live-action films had always missed. While Taylor Kitsch gave it a shot in Origins, that movie just didn’t give him enough to work with. Many attempts to get Gambit into an X-Men movie had failed before and after that, and Deadpool & Wolverine was still a long way off. As a longtime fan, X-Men ’97 gave me exactly what I’d been waiting for – and it was incredibly emotional.
The finale of X-Men ’97 strongly hinted at Gambit joining Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen, promising more to come, though with a potentially ominous twist. Fans have been eagerly awaiting his return ever since Channing Tatum’s memorable cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, and after years of waiting for his appearance in X-Men: Doomsday and the second season of X-Men ’97, it looks like this summer might finally be Gambit’s time to shine – and it’s about time!
