After a couple of years, DC Comics has resurrected a beloved character from Wonder Woman‘s past. Diana has been through a lot recently, starting with overthrowing the secret king of America, the Sovereign. His influence didn’t end there, though, extending to a small nation ruled by the cruel Mouse Man, which Diana also freed. She even rescued the Sovereign’s baby daughter, Lyssa, but Lyssa ultimately became an even bigger danger than her father ever was.
The story of Wonder Woman sometimes jumps ahead twenty years to a time when her daughter, Lyssa, has become a powerful villain known as the Matriarch. In this future, Lyssa has taken over the United States and defeated the Justice League, either killing or capturing its heroes. She’s also nearly wiped out the Amazons, leaving only Wonder Woman and her daughter, Trinity, still free. This sets the stage for a massive conflict, known as the Wonder War, that the series has been leading up to. However, Wonder Woman is shocked when she unexpectedly encounters someone from her past.
Steve Trevor is Back From the Dead (Finally)

The conflict known as the Wonder War continues in issue #32 of Wonder Woman, created by Tom King, Daniel Sampere, Adriano Lucas, and Clayton Cowles. Meanwhile, the Matriarch, who is secretly a killer, is attempting to win over the public with a friendly interview. She’s carefully crafting a loving image to conceal her true nature. As she performs for the cameras, Wonder Woman and Trinity sneak into Themyscira, quickly disabling a guard and preparing for an imminent attack from the Matriarch’s forces.
As expected, the soldiers arrived quickly, wielding swords and spears. However, they were no match for the mother and daughter’s incredible fighting skills. The two of them effortlessly fought off wave after wave of soldiers, even managing to talk during the battle about its significance. After a long fight, Diana and Lizzie emerged victorious, defeating the remaining guards and immediately heading for the island’s most heavily guarded fortress.
The interview wraps up with Matriarch learning that Themyscira has been invaded, and Wonder Woman and Trinity have defeated many of the attackers. Lyssa immediately ends the interview and deals with the reporter who conducted it – by killing them. Meanwhile, on Themyscira, Diana and Lizzie reach the fortress and discover Superman is being held captive. However, Wonder Woman wasn’t actually looking for Superman; she was searching for Steve Trevor, who is surprisingly still alive. Though injured and bruised, he manages a smile as he’s reunited with the two women he loves.
How Steve Trevor is Alive and What This Means for the Wonder War

Fans of Wonder Woman will recall Steve Trevor’s death at the hands of the Sovereign during the ‘All In’ storyline. Though it seemed final, he surprisingly reappeared in the time-traveling series ‘Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman.’ After Trinity’s attempt to alter the past failed, she sent Jason Todd to the underworld to help her father escape. While the details were unclear, this latest issue shows that Trinity’s plan to bring Steve back ultimately worked.
Beyond the emotional impact of his return, what does Steve’s reappearance mean for the conflict? Lyssa clearly had a purpose for keeping Steve alive – likely to lure out Wonder Woman or Trinity while she eliminates other heroes and villains. Now that Steve is about to be freed, the situation could significantly improve for Wonder Woman.
I’m such a fan of Wonder Woman – she’s incredible, basically a force of nature! But even she needs help, and it’s amazing to see her working with Trinity. Honestly, I was really hoping she’d reconnect with Steve, a truly experienced soldier. He brings so much to the table as they fight to take the world back from the Matriarch. Whether they’ll succeed is still up in the air, but seeing Wonder Woman and Steve reunited, with their little family together again, definitely gives me hope. Things are looking brighter now!
