20-Year-Old Sony JRPG Makes Surprise Return to PS5, PS4 Next Week, Free on PS Plus Premium

Okay, so Sony finally decided to actually add some new games to the PS Plus Premium Classics section! It’s been way too long since they updated it, so this is a welcome change, honestly.

The latest PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium update reveals that Wild Arms 4, a Japanese role-playing game originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005, will be playable on both PS5 and PS4 through emulation, starting April 21st.

The first three Wild Arms games can already be found on the PlayStation Store, which could mean the fifth game – a fan favorite and a relatively late release for the PlayStation 2 – might become available too.

Wild Arms 4 isn’t generally considered one of the best games in the series. Many players enjoy its unique battle system, which uses a hexagonal grid, but the story often receives criticism.

The North American release of the game famously had two monsters missing, but the game itself didn’t acknowledge this, making it impossible to fully complete. The European version wasn’t much better, as it launched with several bugs that were difficult to fix at the time because patching wasn’t easy.

Compared to most JRPGs, Wild Arms 4 is relatively short, taking around 25 to 30 hours to complete. That’s surprisingly good – it doesn’t require a massive time commitment, which is a nice change of pace.

Like other PlayStation 2 games playable through emulation, this version will offer features like save states and the ability to rewind gameplay. Because Sony originally published the game in Japan and XSEED handles it in North America, it will likely also support PlayStation Trophies.

If you have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, this game is already included. However, Sony often offers these older games for individual purchase, so you should be able to buy it separately if you don’t have the subscription.

Thinking about starting Wild Arms 4 for the first time? Or maybe you enjoyed it back on the PlayStation 2? Let’s let Sony know there’s still interest in bringing classic games back by sharing our thoughts in the comments!
