Edgar Wright’s film Baby Driver arrived in theaters in the summer of 2017, offering something fresh amidst the usual blockbusters filled with sequels and superheroes. The movie impressed audiences and critics alike with its original story, expertly crafted car chases, and thrilling action sequences, all set to a diverse and memorable soundtrack. It became Wright’s most successful film, praised for its unique direction and blending of action, romance, and music – turning a simple heist story into a cultural phenomenon. Fans immediately began hoping for a continuation of the story and a chance to see the main character, Baby, back in action. After years of speculation, a decision about a potential Baby Driver sequel has finally been made.
Edgar Wright has confirmed a script for Baby Driver 2 exists. However, he explained on The Playlist’s Discourse Podcast that making a movie depends on many things outside of a director’s control, like timing and funding. While the story foundation is there, Wright cautioned that several practical challenges need to be overcome before a sequel can actually happen.
Can Baby Driver 2 Ever Happen?

The first Baby Driver movie has a very satisfying ending for the main character, Baby (Ansel Elgort). He turns himself in, does his time, and then walks free to begin a fresh start with his girlfriend, Debora (Lily James). It feels like his story is complete, having finally escaped the criminal life that used him. This makes the idea of a sequel a bit strange. It would be hard to come up with a believable reason for Baby, who is now reformed and has some hearing loss, to return to crime without ruining the progress he made in the first film. However, director Edgar Wright is a skilled writer, so if he’s written a script, it’s probably a story worth telling.
Financially, making another Baby Driver movie makes a lot of sense for the studio. The first film did incredibly well, earning almost $227 million globally on a relatively small $34 million budget. That’s a rare level of profit for an original film, making it a very appealing project to continue. Strong reviews and broad audience appeal also suggest a sequel would be popular. However, director Edgar Wright has pointed out that getting the cast back together and finding time in his own schedule will be difficult, even though the film would likely be a good financial bet.
