As September wraps up, streaming services are announcing what new movies and shows will be available starting October 1st. Since it’s Halloween season, many of these releases are horror films. For HBO Max subscribers, that includes a highly-rated horror movie from 2024, which will become available to stream next month.
Beginning October 10th, the film The Substance will be available to stream on HBO Max. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the movie features Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a popular aerobics instructor who loses her job due to her boss’s sexism. She then turns to a questionable black-market serum that promises a youthful transformation, but the results are terrifying. Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid also star in the film, which was a hit with both critics and audiences. It received five Academy Award nominations, including nods for Best Director (Fargeat) and Best Actress (Moore).
The Substance Coming to HBO Max Means a New Chance For Audiences to Discover the Hit

The film *The Substance* will be available on HBO Max in October, which is great news for fans and those who haven’t yet seen it. While it initially played in theaters and was then released on MUBI’s streaming service and on DVD/Blu-ray, HBO Max will expose the film to a much larger audience, including people who missed it in theaters or didn’t have access to MUBI. Now, more people will be able to see what all the excitement was about.
The success of *The Substance* could be a positive sign for other films as well. What makes it stand out – beyond its excellent quality – is that it’s a truly original, serious film made on a relatively small budget that still managed to become a hit. As the film continues to gain attention, particularly with Halloween approaching and horror films dominating the box office, it might encourage studios to take more risks on unique and compelling stories, giving audiences the kind of thoughtful content they crave alongside big-budget blockbusters.
The Substance comes to HBO Max on October 10th.
