A new dinosaur movie from Australia is starting to gain attention, with many people actually preferring it to some of the *Jurassic Park* and *Jurassic World* films. While Steven Spielberg’s 1993 *Jurassic Park* largely defined how we see dinosaurs in modern movies, this new film could be a real contender and offer a fresh take on the genre. It will soon be available to watch on demand, so you can decide for yourself!
The Australian action movie *Primitive War*, which came out on August 21, 2025, throws a platoon of Vietnam War soldiers (set in 1968) into a battle against resurrected dinosaurs. It gained attention as the first Australian film to be featured at a San Diego Comic-Con panel in 2024, and earned $210,730 in limited theatrical release. Now, *Samuel Goldwyn Films* is making the movie available for streaming and rental on October 3, 2025, so you can watch it at home.
Primitive War Has Been Rated Higher Than Many Jurassic Park Movies

Based on over 250 audience reviews on *Rotten Tomatoes*, *Primitive War* has received more positive feedback than six out of the seven films in the *Jurassic Park* and *Jurassic World* series. Although critics gave *Primitive War* a score of 57%, viewers overwhelmingly enjoyed it, giving it an 86% rating. Despite being made with a small budget and a far-out concept, the film has been praised for its acting, action, Luke Sparke’s direction, and overall entertainment value – qualities some feel are lacking in several of the *Jurassic Park* movies.
Although Jurassic Park (1993) remains incredibly popular with both critics (91%) and audiences, Jurassic World (2015) is the only other film in the series to receive a higher critic score, earning 71% approval. However, Primitive War still has a better audience score (78%) than Jurassic World. The newest installment, released in 2025, outperforms The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Jurassic World Dominion, and Jurassic World Rebirth in both critic and audience ratings, making it a standout dinosaur movie with viewers.
Luke Sparke has earned a reputation as a promising Australian director with previous films like *Occupation* and *Bring Him to Me*. His latest movie, *Primitive War*, further solidifies his talent by successfully blending a relatable human story with intense war action and thrilling dinosaur encounters. If you’re a fan of *Jurassic Park*, *Primitive War* offers a great alternative and is strong enough to be enjoyed on its own merits. Keep an eye out for its release on demand October 3rd.
