It’s not uncommon for not every film to become an immediate success, and some end up performing poorly. This seems to be the case with the new sci-fi movie on Prime Video, which was released on July 30, 2025. The movie initially received a zero percent rating from critics, but that number has since slightly increased to 3%. Unfortunately, this remake of one of H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi stories has now earned another unfortunate distinction: it has been added to Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the 100 worst movies ever made.
Currently ranked 88th on the list is the film “War of the Worlds,” a disappointing adaptation by director Rich Lee of H.G. Wells’ 1898 novel bearing the same title. In this movie, Ice Cube plays Will Radford, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officer, whose routine tasks of countering virtual threats are upended by an extraterrestrial invasion. Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Andrea Savage, Henry Hunter Hall, Iman Benson, Devon Bostick, and Michael O’Neill also feature in the cast.
Initially, “War of the Worlds” received a zero percent rating from critics, which is quite unusual for a film. Since its release, this score has climbed to three percent, while audience approval stands at 22%. This positions the movie at number 88 on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the worst films ever made, ranking it below the 2004 Bruce Willis comedy “The Whole Ten Yards” and only slightly above the 2004 Robert De Niro thriller “Godsend”.
If the critical rating for H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds” had persisted at a dismal 0%, it would have placed second in terms of poorest-rated films, surpassed only by the 2002 action film “Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever,” which also boasts a 0% rating among critics but a slightly better 21% approval from audiences. The list includes other notorious flops like “Jaws: The Revenge,” “Getting Even with Dad,” “House of the Dead,” and “Jack and Jill.
The film was included in the list following 30 critic assessments, which collectively concluded that it placed Ice Cube in a clumsy screen-saver filled with excessive product placement, making “War of the Worlds” a potential choice for audiences to reconsider advocating for peace. Critics have criticized the movie as a “thin, frantic, soulless remake” that “mutilates” Wells’ iconic science fiction story. Viewers have echoed these sentiments, urging others to avoid wasting their time on this “bafflingly terrible” adaptation.
While initial reactions to the film were less than favorable, the ensuing buzz surrounding its questionable reception has catapulted “War of the Worlds” into an unexpected streaming sensation. The movie swiftly climbed the streaming charts, now standing as the second most-watched film globally on Amazon Prime Video, according to FlixPatrol. However, exact viewer numbers have yet to be disclosed, leaving us in suspense about just how many viewers are tuning in.
You can currently stream “War of the Worlds” on Amazon Prime Video. This film is a modern take on the timeless story, following the release of the 2005 adaptation starring Tom Cruise, which is available to watch on Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
