Similar to previous years, 2025 saw a lot of reboots and sequels. Sony recently released a self-aware reboot of their 1997 monster movie.
The movie Anaconda, a comedic parody of the original, finally brings Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube together on screen. It also includes a fun surprise for fans of the original film. Director Tom Gormican recently shared the story of how the last-minute cameos by Lopez and Cube came to be.
The 1997 movie featured Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Hyde, and Owen Wilson. The story centered around a documentary team following a snake hunter as he searched for a massive green anaconda. Although critics had mixed opinions, the film was successful and led to several sequels.
This latest film is the sixth in the series and essentially restarts the franchise. It centers on two lifelong friends, Doug and Griff, who decide to remake their favorite movie. While filming in the Amazon rainforest, they unexpectedly encounter a massive anaconda. Director Tom Gormican noted that getting cameos from Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube proved difficult due to scheduling conflicts.
Gormican shared that they filmed the cameo appearance a month ago, on November 17th, as the very last step in post-production. He was finalizing the audio mix when he integrated the footage into a mid-credits sequence he’d prepared, and was surprised it actually worked out.
The director explained that they had to rethink Ice Cube’s appearance in the film. They went through several versions of the ending, and ultimately decided to have him scavenging for flare guns in an abandoned boatyard. The idea was that if he was stranded on the damaged film set, he’d naturally look for something to protect himself with.
He explained that he filmed the scene with a Western-style silhouette effect, obscuring the shooter’s identity. He liked the idea of the character dropping guns behind him as he walked, creating a visually interesting and unique way to introduce the action and protect the other characters – a nod to the film ‘Cube’.
Anaconda Director Explained Why Other Cameos Didn’t Happen
Gormican said they definitely wanted to include cameos from Jon Voight or Owen Wilson, but it wasn’t possible because their characters had already died in previous films. He explained that the returning actors appear in the new sequel because their characters are still alive within the story.
He explained that Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube were making another movie after the first one, and their characters were the only ones who survived.
