As a horror fan, it feels like we’re always getting new vampire and zombie stories – classics like Dracula, Night of the Living Dead, and The Walking Dead have really kept those creatures in the spotlight. But werewolves? They don’t get quite as much attention, even though they have their moments. I was so excited to find a really fantastic werewolf story released in 2025, and it’s a shame more people haven’t discovered it. It’s one of the best I’ve seen in years!
Earlier this year, Zander Cannon launched Sleep, a new comic from Image that’s genuinely unsettling. The story centers around Jonathan Reason, who has a unique problem: whenever he falls asleep, a destructive force is unleashed, putting everyone around him in danger. The terrifying aftermath of these nocturnal events is where the true, surprising heart of the Sleep series is revealed.
Like most werewolf tales, the comic Sleep uses a compelling device to build suspense: each issue ends with the main character, Reason, falling asleep, and begins with him waking up to discover the aftermath of his nighttime activities. The artist, Cannon, uses a striking visual style, primarily greyscale with splashes of red – reserved for Reason’s glasses and the blood left behind by his alter ego. So far, the story hasn’t revealed the monstrous form Reason transforms into, leaving readers to speculate about the extent of the damage he causes. As the story progresses, things are only becoming more complicated, with recent issues revealing new information about Jonathan and the other people in his town.

An Unseen Horror
Some might think a horror story is weaker if it doesn’t show graphic violence, but often what we don’t see is scarier. Take The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – it’s famous for being incredibly bloody, yet the movie itself isn’t overly graphic. The power comes from what’s suggested, and the comic Sleep uses the same technique. By letting the reader imagine the worst, Sleep creates a truly terrifying experience.
As a huge horror fan, I’ve been following the comic Sleep, and it’s really delivering. It was planned for eight issues, and we’re currently on issue six, which is building towards a big finish. Without giving anything away, the latest issue wrapped up a storyline but left me with so many questions – in a good way! It definitely feels like we’re heading for a seriously intense finale. Honestly, with werewolf movies being a bit rare these days, Sleep is a breath of fresh air. It takes familiar horror ideas and adds its own unique spin, easily making it one of the best horror comics I’ve read this year – and it’s still 2025!
