A superhero film from last year is now one of the most popular titles on Hulu, according to data from FlixPatrol. It’s a surprising addition to the top 3, but both critics and viewers really loved it. The movie is darkly funny, quite violent, and has the potential to become a cult favorite.
A new version of the 1984 cult classic, The Toxic Avenger, features Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood. The story follows Winston Gooze, a mistreated janitor who transforms into The Toxic Avenger after a chemical accident. He then has to become a hero, fighting against powerful and corrupt businesses that threaten his family and town. It’s a fight for justice in a world consumed by greed – and Toxie plans to deliver it with a radioactive twist.
It’s A Silly, Gory Good Time—Just Like The Original
The new Toxic Avenger film has received surprisingly positive reviews. It currently boasts an 87% score on the Tomatometer and an 82% score on the Popcornmeter at Rotten Tomatoes. Graeme Tuckett of The Post NZ praised the film, noting that the creators took the project seriously and aimed for quality while still honoring the original’s cult status. Erik Childress of Movie Madness Podcast awarded it 3 out of 4 stars, highlighting Mason Blair’s enjoyable reimagining of the classic and praising performances from Kevin Bacon as the villain and Peter Dinklage, alongside Jacob Tremblay, for creating sympathetic characters amidst the film’s chaotic action.
One viewer described the film Toxic as a darkly funny, over-the-top, and violent story about a janitor taking on corporate wrongdoing. While the reviewer wasn’t previously a fan of Troma films, they believe this is their best work yet, boosted by a dedicated performance from Peter Dinklage despite the film’s absurd plot. The characters are intentionally over-the-top, with Kevin Bacon playing a wonderfully corrupt figure and Elijah Wood continuing to deliver enjoyable supporting roles. The reviewer also praised Wood’s performance in I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, noting that the same director, Macon Blair, helmed both films. They highly recommend checking it out. Ultimately, Toxic is a charming and unique reboot that stands on its own merits.
