2026 Horror Movie Sequel Is Now Streaming After Record-Breaking $214M Box Office (& It’s an Instant Hit)

As a horror fan, I’ve definitely noticed the genre’s ups and downs over the years. We had the big slasher boom in the ’80s, then things really cooled off in the ’90s. But wow, horror is back in a big way, and 2023 has been proof! It’s great to see veterans like Sam Raimi returning with films like Send Help after so long. But honestly, the biggest sign to me that horror is thriving is the surprising success of Obsession. It actually increased its box office numbers from its opening weekend – a rare feat these days – which tells me audiences are hungry for this kind of movie.

The horror genre is thriving, as evidenced by the success of Scream 7. Not only did it have the biggest opening weekend of any film in the Scream series, but it also earned the most money overall. Now, fans can watch the latest installment – Scream 7 – on Paramount+, and it’s already proving popular on the streaming platform, continuing the film’s winning streak.

Scream 7 Dominates Streaming After Box Office Mayhem

This week, Scream 7 became available on Paramount+, and viewers quickly began watching the newest installment in the Scream series. According to FlixPatrol, it immediately jumped to the #1 spot on the platform’s list of most-streamed movies. It even surpassed Top Gun: Maverick, which had held the top position for weeks and remained in the Top 10 for nearly two years. Scream 7 didn’t need a slow climb to the top – it became an instant hit.

The latest Scream movie, Scream 7, proved the franchise is more popular than ever, opening with a record-breaking $63 million – $19 million more than any previous film in the series. It continued to perform well, ultimately becoming the highest-grossing Scream movie worldwide with $207 million, surpassing the previous record by over $50 million. Remarkably, it achieved this success despite receiving very negative reviews.

Despite being the most financially successful film in the Scream series, Scream 7 currently has the lowest critic score, earning just 30% on Rotten Tomatoes – indicated by the platform’s dreaded green splat. Only Scream 3 from 2000 also received a “Rotten” score, with 45% approval. However, audiences seem to enjoy the latest installment more than critics do. While Scream 7’s audience score is 74% – lower than the 90% for Scream VI – it’s still higher than scores for Scream 4 (57%), Scream 3 (38%), and even Scream 2 (59%), which surprisingly has the best critical rating of the series.

Despite everything, the success of Scream 7 – both in theaters and online – guarantees Ghostface will be back in a future film. While screenwriters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman are already working on the eighth movie, details like a release date and cast are still unknown. The endings of Scream VI and Scream 7 leave the future direction unclear, but the Scream franchise has proven it can continually reinvent itself with new characters, much like the Fast and Furious series.
