2026’s Biggest Anime Video Game Adaptation is Coming to Theaters

I’ve always noticed a strong connection between video games and anime. For years, we’ve seen games like Persona, Pokémon, and Cyberpunk 2077 turned into anime series. But it goes both ways – hugely popular anime like One Piece and Dragon Ball are constantly releasing new games for consoles and PCs. Now, one of From Software’s most famous and intense games is getting its own anime adaptation, and it’s exciting because it won’t be limited to just TV. It looks like we’ll be able to see this incredibly violent anime on the big screen in 2026!

From Software’s game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice stood out from titles like Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Bloodborne because it told a much clearer story. Now, Sekiro: No Defeat is an anime adaptation that retells the game’s story. The anime will be available on Crunchyroll starting September 4th, and will also have a three-week theatrical release in Japan. While a release in North America hasn’t been announced yet, fans are hoping it will come to theaters here as well. A new poster for the anime is available below.

From Software is Taking Over

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice isn’t the only FromSoftware game getting adapted for other media. A Bloodborne film, though not an anime, is in the works and has received an R rating. Popular content creator Jacksepticeye is producing it to ensure it stays true to the game’s world of Yharnam. Meanwhile, A24 is actively producing a live-action Elden Ring movie, and pictures from the set have already appeared online. Although neither film has a release date yet, it’s clear that FromSoftware is expanding its reach beyond video games and aiming to become a major player in the entertainment industry.

The new anime adaptation has faced some criticism, with many fans accusing the production company, QZilla, of using artificial intelligence. Last year, the studio officially responded to these concerns about Sekiro: No Defeat, stating that the entire project is being created as traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation. They confirmed that no generative AI is being used at all, and emphasized the dedication of their team to creating each scene with care. The use of AI in anime has been a sensitive topic for fans lately, and this issue doesn’t seem to be going away.
