2026 is looking like a fantastic year for anime fans! It started strong with several highly anticipated new series, and the rest of the year’s lineup promises to be just as good. While popular genres continue to thrive, ninja anime are gaining a dedicated following, blending rich Japanese traditions with exciting, engaging stories. This year’s upcoming ninja anime is particularly exciting because it’s based on the critically acclaimed video game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Last year, an anime adaptation of the popular video game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, titled Sekiro: No Defeat, was announced and quickly gained a lot of attention. The released trailers and artwork closely match the game’s atmosphere, and the anime will cover one of the game’s original endings in eight episodes, making it a highly anticipated release. Recently, it was announced that Sekiro: No Defeat will first be shown in theaters starting September 4th, though it won’t be available everywhere just yet.

While Sekiro: No Defeat is getting a limited theatrical release, it will initially only be shown in Japanese cinemas. The anime will play for three weeks, starting on the first Friday of September. Fans outside of Japan hoping to see it in theaters are currently out of luck, and may have to wait for it to stream on Crunchyroll. Although a global release date hasn’t been officially announced, the theatrical release suggests the series will become available after its run in theaters ends.
From what I understand, the anime is currently slated to premiere in Fall 2026, probably starting in October. It sounds like we’ll get new episodes weekly until all eight have aired. While it’s a bit of a letdown that the initial theatrical release is only happening in Japan, the fact that they’re doing a theatrical run at all tells me they really believe in this project and are aiming for a high-quality show. The visuals they’ve shared so far definitely back that up. If this theatrical release goes well, Sekiro: No Defeat has the potential to be not just the biggest ninja anime of 2026, but a standout release in the genre for years to come.
