Amazon had a big success earlier this year with the film Project Hail Mary, which had a record-breaking opening weekend. This was an important step for Amazon as it tries to become a major player in movie theaters, demonstrating its ability to release popular blockbusters. Now, as the summer movie season continues, Amazon is hoping for another hit with Masters of the Universe. While the reboot of the 1980s classic has received good early reviews, it’s currently expected to perform lower at the box office compared to other films.
Okay, so I’ve been following the box office predictions, and it looks like Masters of the Universe is expected to bring in around $30 to $35 million domestically during its opening weekend. Honestly, that’s a bit disappointing. Scary Movie is predicted to do much better, around $45 to $50 million, and even the indie horror film Backrooms is expected to earn about the same! When you compare it to other recent big releases, Masters of the Universe just doesn’t seem to be hitting the same numbers as films like The Mandalorian and Grogu ($81.6 million) or Project Hail Mary ($80.5 million). It’s even behind Mortal Kombat II, which opened with $38.5 million. I was hoping for more, but we’ll see how it actually plays out.
Can Masters of the Universe Exceed Box Office Projections?

Predicting movie earnings is never perfect. Films often surprise us, performing better than initially expected. We recently saw this with Backrooms, which earned significantly more than its predicted $40+ million opening weekend. Even The Mandalorian and Grogu, which hasn’t been a huge hit so far, exceeded expectations. Before its release, the film was projected to make $82 million over the Memorial Day weekend, but it actually earned $98 million. Unexpected successes have become increasingly common, likely because it’s harder to accurately gauge audience interest in the current movie-going climate.
For the new Masters of the Universe movie to succeed, it needs a bit of luck. Positive buzz will be crucial – the film needs to appeal to more than just its existing fans to perform well. Early signs are good: social media responses have been enthusiastic, praising the movie as a fun fantasy adventure with strong acting and exciting visuals. Plus, it currently has a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, which could convince hesitant viewers to give it a chance in theaters.
Recently, Masters of the Universe got a lucky break with a last-minute release in IMAX theaters. When The Mandalorian and Grogu weren’t drawing big audiences, IMAX decided to show Masters of the Universe instead. More and more movie fans are choosing premium large formats like IMAX for big, exciting films. IMAX ticket sales often make up a significant part of a movie’s opening weekend revenue, which could really help Masters of the Universe.
Amazon is really counting on Masters of the Universe to perform well. While Project Hail Mary was a one-time event, Amazon envisions Masters of the Universe as the start of a potential franchise, with plans already in place for future movies. However, those sequels depend on the first film being a significant success. With a production budget of $170 to $200 million, a $35 million opening weekend wouldn’t be great, especially considering that June is becoming an increasingly competitive month for movie releases.
