22 Years Later, One of The Greatest Psychological Anime Returns With an Official New Release

Naoki Urasawa is a highly celebrated manga artist, considered a legend in the field. His work consistently receives praise for its beautiful artwork and compelling stories. Though he’s most famous for his 1994 manga, Monster, he’s created over a dozen different series since he began his career in 1981, and continues to draw in readers with his captivating tales. After the success of Monster, Urasawa stunned fans again with 20th Century Boys, a complex and gripping psychological mystery often considered his greatest work. However, Urasawa consistently delivers brilliant stories, including Billy Bat and Pluto, always keeping his audience surprised and engaged.

Fans have long requested a better version of the highly acclaimed anime series Monster, and now their wish is coming true! Discotek Media will soon release the show on Blu-ray, which is fantastic news for devoted viewers. While considered a classic, Monster has been hard to find physically – used DVDs were expensive, and existing Blu-rays weren’t compatible with players in North America. This new release means thousands of fans can finally experience Naoki Urasawa’s masterpiece in high quality when it comes out next year.

Monster Is Getting the Long-Awaited Blu-ray

Naoki Urasawa’s Monster tells the story of Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a gifted surgeon whose life falls apart when he chooses to save a young boy instead of the mayor. This decision costs him everything – his job, reputation, and fiancée. Shortly after, both the boy and his twin brother disappear, and a series of murders begins. Nine years later, a detective starts to suspect Tenma, leading him to confront someone from his past who holds the key to the unfolding events. Filled with remorse, Tenma travels through Germany, finding companions who strengthen his determination to undo the damage caused by his earlier choice and find forgiveness.

Adapted into anime by studio Madhouse (known for series like Hunter x Hunter, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and Hajime no Ippo) in 2004, this 74-episode series is highly acclaimed as both a manga and anime. It’s a gripping psychological thriller that explores complex themes like morality and the nature of good and evil, keeping viewers constantly engaged. With animation that was innovative for its time, a suspenseful soundtrack, and compelling storytelling, the anime quickly gained a dedicated fanbase and marked a major breakthrough for creator Naoki Urusawa, paving the way for his later successes like 20th Century Boys, Pluto, and Billy Bat.

I’ve been following this series, and it’s become incredibly popular – over 20 million copies are out there! It’s also received a lot of recognition, including nominations for and wins of major awards like the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the Shogakukan Manga Award. The anime adaptation is fantastic; it stays true to the manga while adding some really cool elements you can only get with animation. If you’re curious about the work of this author, who Bong Joon Ho called “the greatest storyteller of our time,” the anime is a perfect place to start. And good news – an even higher-quality version will be released in 2026.
