28 Years Later, The Greatest Psychological Thriller Anime of All Time Returns With an Official New Release

Only a handful of anime movies have truly become classics, loved by both critics and audiences. And now, one of those beloved films is getting a fresh new look with a remastered version coming to theaters! While anime has been doing well in cinemas recently – like with the popular Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle – that hasn’t always been true. What Is Perfect Blue About?

GKIDS revealed at Anime NYC 2025 that a newly remastered version of Perfect Blue will be shown in US cinemas starting October 3rd. The film, directed by the acclaimed Satoshi Kon (known for works like Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, and Paprika), is based on Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis and features a screenplay by Sadayuki Mura. Perfect Blue resonated with viewers thanks to its compelling story and distinctive, visually stunning style, making this 4K remaster a must-see on the big screen.

The movie centers on a singer attempting to become an actress, but her new career path leads to a series of traumatic experiences. GKIDS describes the story as following Mima Kirigoe, a former pop star, who takes on an acting role featuring a violent attack and releases a revealing photo book. While her transformation gains attention, it also causes discomfort for herself, her fans, and her manager as she adjusts to life after being a pop idol.

The story quickly becomes dark and suspenseful as Mima, a pop star turned actress, is stalked and people around her start turning up dead. She begins to question her own sanity, wondering if she’s developing a split personality mirroring the character she plays. Adding to the mystery, the ‘former’ Mima, the pop idol who supposedly retired, starts appearing. Over the years, Perfect Blue has heavily influenced many films and shows, so now is a great time to finally experience this classic for yourself.
