23 Years Ago Today, SyFy Adapted the Same Story as 2026’s Most Exciting Sci-Fi Masterpiece (& It Still Holds Up)

SyFy often goes unrecognized for consistently supporting dedicated fan communities, even when other media outlets move on. Whether it’s reviving beloved shows like Battlestar Galactica and the Stargate series for a new generation, or turning films like 12 Monkeys and Chucky into successful TV shows, the network—formerly known as ‘The Sci-Fi Channel’—has a long history of keeping these fandoms thriving.

SyFy has created a number of TV movies and miniseries that have become fan favorites. A prime example is a sci-fi adaptation from over twenty years ago, which is still considered a highlight of the franchise. With entertainment often revisiting popular themes, fans will soon get to see this story again in a major new film coming out in 2026.

Dune‘s Wildest Story Was Adapted Into A Solid 2000s Miniseries

If you haven’t seen the 2003 miniseries Children of Dune, it’s worth checking out. It’s based on the second and third books in Frank Herbert’s Dune series, Dune: Messiah and Children of Dune. The story follows the family of Paul Atreides after he achieves his destiny as the Kwisatz Haderach – a being the Bene Gesserit order spent millennia trying to create. Paul has transformed the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis into a powerful, zealous army. Meanwhile, those loyal to the former Emperor, the leaders of the Bene Gesserit, and the heads of powerful guilds all conspire to remove Paul from power. At the same time, traditional Fremen are plotting against him, fearing his plans to change the planet will destroy their way of life.

Inside Paul’s home, conflicts are brewing between his Fremen lover, Chani, and his wife, Princess Irulan. Simultaneously, Paul’s sister, Alia, fiercely defends House Atreides using harsh methods, ultimately leading to a tragic birth for Paul’s twins. Despite this, Paul’s powerful ability to foresee the future guides him to make difficult choices, ensuring his family’s lasting power, even if it requires great sacrifice.

In Children of Dune, Paul Atreides’ children, Leto II and Ghanima, are growing up under the care of Princess Irulan and their aunt, Alia. Lady Jessica returns to Arrakis to find her family struggling, as Alia becomes increasingly troubled by the influence of her ancestors. While the Atreides family investigates rumors of a new messiah in the desert—possibly a still-living Paul—Alia is overtaken by the vengeful spirit of her grandfather, Baron Harkonnen, who uses her to attack House Atreides. Irulan’s sister, Wensicia, also seeks revenge for the Corrino family and attempts to kill Leto and Ghanima. The children manage to escape and, like their father, tap into the power of the desert (Leto II) and forge strategic marriages with the Corrinos (Ghanima). These actions allow them to overcome their enemies and ensure the Atreides family’s continued power.

With Children of Dune, Frank Herbert really began to explore his most imaginative sci-fi ideas. This included Leto II’s transformation, merging with sandworms to gain incredible powers, and the unusual return of Paul as a prophetic figure. The themes of visions and inherited connections, hinted at in the first book, became central to the story in Children of Dune and beyond, which has made it challenging to adapt these books into films or TV shows.

John Harrison previously directed the successful 2000 SyFy miniseries adaptation of Dune, which won him two Emmys. A director’s cut was released in 2002 and is still considered the most accurate adaptation of the novel, even compared to the 1984 film by David Lynch and Denis Villeneuve’s recent two-part series (2021, 2024). It was a natural step for SyFy to commission a sequel, and Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune proved equally successful, receiving four Emmy nominations and winning an award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects.

The miniseries boasts a strong cast, with Alec Newman reprising his role as Paul Atreides from the original miniseries. James McAvoy, known for his work in the X-Men films, plays Leto II. Other notable actors include Alice Krige (from Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers and Star Trek: First Contact) as Lady Jessica, Susan Sarandon as Princess Wensicia, Ian McNeice (of HBO’s Rome) as Baron Harkonnen, and P.H. Moriarty (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) as Gurney Halleck, among others.

Dune Is Finally Going To Tell (Some of) This Story On the Big Screen

Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two, plans to release the third film in the series, Dune: Part Three, later this year. This time, instead of loosely adapting the source material like the miniseries, Villeneuve will be closely following the third book, Dune Messiah, for his film.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune has become a hugely successful and award-winning franchise, earning over a billion dollars worldwide. Villeneuve has intentionally focused on the story’s social, political, and religious themes, while downplaying some of its more fantastical science fiction elements like space travel and precognition. Adapting the later books in Herbert’s series would be even more challenging, which is why Villeneuve and actor Timothée Chalamet have stated that this upcoming film will conclude the Dune trilogy, bringing Paul Atreides’ main story to an end.

So, it looks like Dune 3 is going to adapt Dune: Messiah, which is a really fascinating and darker story. It’s all about the consequences Paul Atreides faces for becoming a messianic figure and leading that huge galactic war – basically, he’s got a lot of karmic debt to pay. And the good news? It’s currently slated to arrive in IMAX theaters on December 18th!
