Today marks the 25th anniversary of the first Christmas episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. This episode was also the debut of a character who has become a fan favorite. SpongeBob SquarePants is a huge hit for Nickelodeon, and it’s amazing how much more popular it’s become over the past 25 years. The show has grown to include many seasons, spin-offs, and movies. While many episodes are fondly remembered, the first Christmas special—which introduced SpongeBob to the holiday—remains particularly impactful.
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the first SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas special, “Christmas Who?”, which premiered on December 7, 2000. This episode was a first for the show in several ways: it was the first holiday-themed installment, the first to be twice as long as a regular episode, the first to feature a different version of the theme song, and it introduced fans to Patchy the Pirate, the president of the SpongeBob fan club.
SpongeBob Introduced Patchy the Pirate 25 Years Ago Today

I remember when “Christmas Who?” aired during the second season of SpongeBob SquarePants. It really showed how much the show had grown in just a short time! There was a lot of buzz leading up to it because it was a longer episode than usual. But it ended up being a bigger deal than anyone expected – it was how fans first met Patchy the Pirate! Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob, actually appeared on screen to introduce Patchy as the president of the SpongeBob fan club, clearly excited to see what everyone was up to in the special.
Patchy the Pirate was always joined by his puppet parrot, Potty, who frequently made funny, sometimes sarcastic comments about Patchy during the breaks between segments of SpongeBob SquarePants. Patchy became a beloved part of the show, appearing throughout the series after his initial introduction. Interestingly, he first appeared in a Christmas special – not a major event or movie – and helped make that holiday episode particularly memorable for fans over the years.
SpongeBob Knocked Christmas Out of the Park
“Christmas Who?” is a classic Christmas episode that beautifully captures the spirit of the holiday. It features Sandy explaining Christmas to SpongeBob and Patrick, who then share their excitement with the whole town and eagerly await Santa’s arrival. The episode is especially remembered for its catchy song, “The Very First Christmas,” which has become a yearly favorite, and all these elements combined to make it a truly beloved holiday hit.
This Christmas episode of SpongeBob SquarePants remains a fan favorite, even though the show has created many more holiday specials over the years. It’s easy to understand why – it was the first of its kind for the series, and still holds up as a classic after all this time.
