It might surprise you, but Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson actually appeared in a Star Trek series early in his acting career, as he was starting out after professional wrestling. He recently shared the story in an interview, and praised Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine, for making the experience so positive for him.
As a longtime Trek fan, I remember the buzz when Jeri Ryan first appeared as Seven of Nine on Voyager back in 1997. While many of us now know her from Picard, it was on Voyager that she really made her mark. Seven of Nine wasn’t just another character; she was groundbreaking. She was a former Borg, struggling to reclaim her humanity after being cut off from the Collective. And honestly, beyond Picard himself, she’s one of the most compelling examples of the lasting psychological impact the Borg can have on an individual – a truly fascinating and complex character.
Seven of Nine quickly became a fan favorite on Voyager thanks to her complex personality and intriguing past. By Season 6 in 2000, she was featured in episodes focused on her character, and the episode “Tsunkatse” gave her a particularly action-packed role. The perfect opponent for her? None other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a major action star at the time.

In the episode “Tsunkatse,” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays a skilled warrior from the Pendari race, competing in a dangerous intergalactic fighting tournament. The tournament is organized by a ruthless individual named Penk, who also kidnaps participants. When Seven of Nine and Tuvok arrive to study the event, they are captured, and Seven is forced to fight in the arena. Her first match is against Johnson’s character, and despite putting up a good fight, she is defeated – with Johnson even incorporating some of his famous wrestling moves into the scene.
Early in Dwayne Johnson‘s acting career, around the year 2000, he was still developing as a performer. He acknowledges that Star Trek was one of the franchises that gave him a positive boost and helped launch his career.
Johnson not only enjoyed working on Star Trek: Voyager and described the set as “amazing,” but also shared a particularly heartwarming story about filming scenes with Jeri Ryan.
Dwayne Johnson praised the entire cast and crew, singling out Jeri Ryan as particularly wonderful. He told Moovy.dk (via Trek Movie) that he was new to acting, coming from a wrestling background where performance is different. He appreciated how welcoming, warm, and supportive Jeri Ryan was, especially considering he was unfamiliar with cues, marks, and dialogue.
Johnson emphasized that Jeri Ryan was different from many other actors, who were resistant to someone from professional wrestling entering their field. He said, “Jeri was always great. She was genuinely cool, and people remember how you treat them.”
It seems Jeri Ryan is hoping for a favor from Dwayne Johnson. Having a connection like that is always a valuable asset for someone in Hollywood.
Star Trek: Voyager can be streamed on Paramount+.
