26 Years Ago Today, Star Trek: Voyager Started an Insult to An Iconic Character That Was Only Fixed In 2026

This year celebrates 60 years of Star Trek. Although no new TV shows are currently being filmed, the future looks bright for the franchise. Paramount’s new management has pledged its support, with one movie already planned and a possible announcement at Comic Con hinting at more to come. Plus, with so much existing Star Trek content available, fans can always revisit classic episodes and stories. Even the latest shows and comics seem to be drawing heavily on that beloved history.

Twenty-six years ago, on May 24, 2000, Star Trek: Voyager delivered a particularly stinging insult that became infamous in Star Trek history. This moment sparked a storyline about making amends that lasted nearly thirty years and only recently concluded with the newer Star Trek series. The episode “Unimatrix Zero” (part one) is considered a standout, not only for its exploration of the Borg, but also as a strong showcase for the character Seven of Nine. If you were disappointed she wasn’t in the cancelled Star Trek: Legacy series, revisiting this episode is a good idea. Unfortunately, the same episode also marked a particularly low point for Harry Kim, intensifying the running joke about his never receiving a promotion.

Star Trek Finally Resolved Voyager’s Harry Kim Insult in 2026

The episode “Unimatrix Zero” begins with Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeil) having recently been demoted to ensign. He earned this punishment for taking a shuttle without permission and attacking a Monean oxygen refinery – actions he took to help the Moneans avoid an environmental disaster, despite directly disobeying orders and violating the Prime Directive. While his intentions were good, he broke serious rules, and only avoided being fired due to fortunate circumstances. However, by the time “Unimatrix Zero” begins, Paris has been promoted back to his original rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, a result of his excellent service.

It seemed Harry Kim was told he couldn’t be promoted to officer because Starfleet ships didn’t usually offer on-the-spot commissions. However, this rule didn’t apply to Paris, who was quickly reinstated to his former rank. Instead of rewarding Kim’s excellent service with a promotion, the position was simply held open for Paris. This appeared to be clear favoritism and was particularly frustrating for Kim, who many believe was kept as an ensign simply for plot purposes. Fans have long debated this unfair treatment, and it was made worse by Harry’s feeling of being overlooked in the later seasons of Voyager, especially with the introduction of Seven of Nine. The resulting fan campaign continues to generate discussion online.

It took 26 years, but a long-standing oversight was finally corrected. The first episode of the short-lived series Starfleet Academy showed Harry Kim as an Admiral, recognizing his accomplishments after his difficult experiences in the Delta Quadrant. This felt like a fitting tribute, finally acknowledging his service and somewhat making up for the unfair treatment he received in the ‘Unimatrix Zero’ storyline. It was a delayed honor, but a welcome one.
