The comic series Maul – Shadow Lord explains Darth Maul’s biggest vulnerability, and it stems from his history with Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s not surprising, though, as Obi-Wan is known for being effective against the Sith. He defeated Maul while still a Padawan learner, and later proved skilled enough to fight Count Dooku multiple times. Most notably, Obi-Wan survived the deadly Order 66 and ultimately defeated Darth Vader, first on Mustafar and again in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Obi-Wan was sure he could defeat the Sith, but his first victory over Darth Maul wasn’t as complete as he thought – Maul actually survived. Fueled by intense anger and hatred, Maul was rebuilt as a cyborg and emerged as a powerful force during the Clone Wars, challenging both Jedi and Sith. The comic series, Maul – Shadow Lord, reveals how Maul endured the difficult years following the rise of the Empire, and it highlights just how much Obi-Wan unknowingly diminished his enemy’s power.
Maul Was Never Quite the Same After His Phantom Menace Defeat

I was completely captivated by episode 4 of Maul – Shadow Lord! Seeing Maul clash with Master Eeko-Dio Daki and his Padawan, Devon Izara, was incredible. He really unleashed his signature double-bladed lightsaber – it was exactly the kind of brutal, high-stakes duel he’s prepared for, a fight against a Master and Apprentice where survival isn’t guaranteed. I honestly didn’t expect him to struggle as much as he did, though. It wasn’t a loss by any means, but Master Daki definitely held his own and landed some really powerful hits!
Devon immediately identified Maul, implying the Jedi had prepared everyone for his possible return and thoroughly briefed them on his vulnerabilities. Master Daki, for example, knew about Maul’s cybernetic legs and skillfully targeted them during their fight, understanding that damaging them would weaken him. This was a clever tactic, as Maul seemed completely surprised by the attacks. Maul hadn’t anticipated this because his training with Darth Sidious occurred before he lost his legs to Obi-Wan.
Sith Lords generally concentrate on maximizing their existing power, unlike Jedi, who often develop skills to overcome their limitations. For example, Yoda’s fighting style helps him deal with his small stature, and Mace Windu’s technique manages his susceptibility to the dark side. However, Darth Maul’s fighting style hasn’t changed since his injuries on Naboo, leaving him unable to adapt and vulnerable to attacks that exploit his weakness – a flaw opponents will likely continue to target.
