27 Years Ago, DC Made the Best Alternate Batman Comic Book Canon

Batman is likely the most famous superhero ever created. Bruce Wayne, the man behind the mask, is known globally as the defender of Gotham City. He’s become more than just a comic book character; Batman is a cultural icon and a household name, capturing the imagination of people worldwide. The identities of Batman and Bruce Wayne are so closely linked that many people see them as inseparable, with some even suggesting that Batman is the true identity and Bruce Wayne is simply a disguise. While this idea is open to debate, the very fact that it’s considered highlights just how deeply connected the two personas are in the public consciousness.

The massive popularity of Batman, combined with the strong identity of Bruce Wayne as the character, makes it incredibly difficult to imagine anyone else taking on the role. While Dick Grayson had been well-established as a potential successor, it would still be a huge risk for the comics to introduce a new Batman. However, 27 years ago, DC Comics surprisingly introduced a fantastic alternate version that became part of the official story. The first Batman Beyond comic debuted in March 1999, and it paved the way for a significant shift in the Batman universe.

From TV Sensation to Comic Book Hero

If you didn’t know, Batman Beyond was a continuation of the popular Batman: The Animated Series, set in the future. Years after Bruce Wayne retired, crime surged in a city called Neo Gotham. A teenage boy named Terry McGinnis got into trouble with a gang called the Jokerz, who pursued him to the abandoned Wayne Manor. After Bruce Wayne, now elderly, scared them off, Terry helped him inside and stumbled upon the Batcave. Though he initially left, Terry decided to become the new Batman after his father was killed, using a high-tech Batsuit and with Bruce Wayne as his mentor.

The initial Batman Beyond comic series was short, consisting of just six issues. The first two issues retold the stories from the first two episodes of the TV show, while the other four presented brand new adventures that continued the overall plot. These new issues followed a similar ‘villain of the week’ style, meaning each one told a complete story on its own. The stories felt very much like the show, featuring familiar threats like the return of Blight and a resurrected prince who targeted Terry’s girlfriend, Dana. However, issue #4 was unique, bringing in the Demon Etrigan – a character rarely seen in the DC animated universe. This team-up marked Terry’s first connection to the larger DC Universe and was a key moment in his development.

The Yet Still Possible Future

Though initially created to extend his animated series, Terry McGinnis’s Batman opened the door for the character to become part of the main DC comic book universe. The popularity of Terry’s take on Batman demonstrated that even an established hero like Batman could successfully pass the mantle to a successor with the right approach. Becoming an official comic book character allowed Terry to team up with various Batmen from across the multiverse and gave writers the freedom to explore him in different timelines and alternate realities.

As a big Batman fan, I always loved the idea of future Batmen, and Terry McGinnis is one of the best. Grant Morrison was the first to really bring him into the main DC Universe. It happened in Batman #700, where Terry was a kid rescued by Damian Wayne from a new version of Two-Face. Damian then basically took Terry under his wing, training him to eventually become the next Batman and wear that awesome suit! After that, we started seeing Terry pop up in all sorts of possible future timelines. The version of Terry we’re following now showed up during the Future’s End event, and he’s been hanging out with the current Bat-Family ever since. He still represents one possible future for Bruce Wayne’s legacy, and honestly, none of it would have happened without the original Batman Beyond animated series laying the groundwork for him to jump into the comics.
