When people talk about the longest-running and most important animated shows, titles like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and One Piece often come up. One of these standouts recently celebrated its 27th anniversary. Animated shows are usually more visually and memorably distinct than live-action programs, thanks to their diverse worlds and character designs. The bright colors and recognizable voices really stick with viewers, creating lasting impressions.
When people think of classic cartoons, Nickelodeon consistently comes to mind. Since its original animated series debuted in the early 1990s, the channel has continuously created shows that appeal to viewers of all ages. But one Nickelodeon cartoon, in particular, has become truly legendary, achieving a level of popularity that others can only dream of for almost three decades.
SpongeBob SquarePants Was Released 27 Years Ago Today

In the late 1990s, Stephen Hillenburg wore a Hawaiian shirt when he presented the concept for what would become SpongeBob SquarePants to Nickelodeon executives. They liked his idea and asked him and his team to create a pilot episode in two weeks. That pilot, called “Help Wanted,” featured SpongeBob, a fry cook, and his coworkers at the Krusty Krab as they struggled to handle a huge wave of hungry anchovies.
The first episodes of Nickelodeon’s longest-running series—including “Help Wanted,” “Reef Blower,” and “Tea at the Treedome”—first aired on May 1, 1999, immediately following the Kid’s Choice Awards. A second episode followed on July 17, 1999, and the first season continued airing until it finished on March 3, 2001.
SpongeBob SquarePants has been a hit show for 27 years, with 16 seasons and over 330 episodes. The latest season, season 16, started airing on June 27, 2025, and new episodes were released through November 28, 2025, with more scheduled to return on May 15, 2026.
Despite some weaker seasons, SpongeBob SquarePants has consistently been well-received, with many seasons considered among Nickelodeon’s best. The show has been incredibly influential, inspiring countless imitators and fundamentally changing television animation. It’s somewhat surprising that SpongeBob has become Nickelodeon’s most recognizable character, considering he first appeared eight years after the network launched its original animated series.
Beyond the original SpongeBob series, the franchise includes a wide range of other content. This includes two spin-off shows, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and The Patrick Star Show, four major movies, plus films focusing on Plankton and Sandy Cheeks. There are also video games, comic books, storybooks, and a huge variety of toys and clothing.
After Nearly 3 Decades, SpongeBob Is Still As Relevant As Ever

Despite being on the air for 27 years, SpongeBob remains incredibly popular. While some longtime fans feel the show declined in quality after its early seasons, losing some of its original appeal, recent seasons have been well-received by critics, demonstrating that SpongeBob still has a lot to offer.
The world of SpongeBob is expanding rapidly, with four movies and two spin-off shows released just in the 2020s. Nickelodeon is clearly committed to continuing SpongeBob‘s success, recognizing him as a key part of their brand. This makes sense, considering the franchise has generated over $16 billion in sales of merchandise, making it Paramount Consumer Products’ most profitable property.
Although SpongeBob SquarePants will eventually conclude, it doesn’t appear that will happen soon. A new spin-off series is already being developed for Netflix, and the main show will return with season 16 in May.
No Nickelodeon show has achieved the same level of success and cultural impact as SpongeBob SquarePants, despite many attempts. SpongeBob has become incredibly linked with the Nickelodeon brand and has deeply resonated with multiple generations of viewers.
