Today marks the 27th anniversary of the Simpsons episode “D’oh in the Wind,” which first aired on FOX on November 15, 1998. The episode kicks off when Homer attempts to join the Screen Actors Guild and Lisa notices he’s only written his middle initial. This prompts Homer to discover what his middle name actually is. He and Grampa travel to a farm where Homer’s mother once lived as a hippie, and they ultimately learn that his middle name is Jay.
It turns out Homer Simpson’s full name is Homer Jay Simpson, which is funny because he’ll still say his name the same way he always has. The writers chose ‘Jay’ as his middle name as a nod to Jay Ward, the creator of Rocky and Bullwinkle, and apparently, it took them three days to finally decide on it, according to writer Donick Cary.
How This Changed Homer Forever
After Homer learns his middle name, he’s suddenly inspired to embrace a hippie lifestyle, just like his mother used to. True to form, he gets carried away with this new interest and almost sabotages a business run by Mona’s old friends. Surprisingly, the reveal of his middle name didn’t have a lasting impact on the show. It was a good way to explore his mother’s past, but Homer quickly returned to his typical antics.
This episode fundamentally changed how fans viewed Homer Simpson. For years, they’d wondered about his backstory, and it finally provided answers, resolving a long-standing mystery. It gave the character a richer, more complete history, allowing writers to explore even more complex sides of him. This explains why the Homer we see now is so different from his earlier portrayal, and why we continue to discover new things about him. The episode opened up an exciting new path for understanding what motivates him.
