28 Years sequel director explains why her film was unaffected by reactions to the ending

Nia DaCosta’s film, Hedda, is now streaming on Prime Video, and her next project is hitting UK cinemas soon. It’s a major release everyone is anticipating.

Daniel DaCosta is directing the follow-up to Danny Boyle’s ’28 Years Later,’ titled ‘The Bone Temple.’ This movie is planned as the second installment in a three-part series, and Boyle hopes to complete the trilogy with a third film, though it hasn’t been officially approved yet.

Since I filmed my movie immediately after Danny Boyle finished his, I didn’t have to adjust my approach based on how his film was received. We just each made our movies independently.

We were all incredibly proud of the films we were making, and it was fantastic to see such a positive reaction to Danny’s movie. I’m really hoping people will be excited to see mine too! Danny is a truly talented filmmaker, and I always expected his film would be a hit.

Boyle’s film continues the story from 2002’s 28 Days Later, jumping ahead 28 years. It follows a new group of survivors who have built a community on the island of Lindisfarne (also known as Holy Island), managing to stay safe from the infected.

Twelve-year-old Spike, played by Alfie Williams and the son of characters played by Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, found himself alone on the mainland by the end of the movie. This happened after a series of upsetting events, including his mother’s death and an encounter with a strange doctor, played by Ralph Fiennes, forcing him to fend for himself.

Towards the end of the movie, the protagonist encounters a cult led by the character Sir Jimmy Crystal, played by Jack O’Connell – a figure clearly inspired by Jimmy Savile. This leads to a shockingly violent scene where the cult brutally kills a group of infected people, a moment that dramatically shifts the film’s overall mood.

The initial trailer for the upcoming sequel dropped last month, hinting at two main plotlines. One will delve into the personal life of Dr. Kelson (played by Fiennes), while the other will center on O’Connell’s character and his group of friends.

The story continues as Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) enters a surprising new relationship with potentially global repercussions. Meanwhile, Spike (Alfie Williams) has a terrifying experience with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) that he can’t seem to shake.

In The Bone Temple, the biggest danger isn’t the infected themselves, but how people treat each other while trying to survive. The cruelty of survivors can be even more frightening than the monsters they face.
