Superman is having a major moment right now. He’s not just popular in comic books – though he definitely appears in many ongoing series – but also all over television and film. He recently returned to the big screen in James Gunn’s Superman, and will be in this summer’s Supergirl movie. Another Superman sequel is already in the works. Before that, he was the star of the TV shows Superman & Lois and the long-running hit Smallville.
Many actors have played Superman, bringing his heroic deeds to life on screen with compelling stories. But before them all, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman offered a different take. While still showcasing his powers, the show uniquely focused on Clark Kent’s everyday life and, crucially, on his romantic relationship with Lois Lane – arguably the most important part of Superman’s story. That era ended 29 years ago today.
Lois & Clark Was As Much About, Well, Lois and Clark as It Was About Superman
Most live-action Superman stories include the romance between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, but the TV series Lois & Clark handled it uniquely. Coming after Christopher Reeve’s iconic portrayal, this ABC show still featured Superman’s adventures, but focused primarily on relationships. The series shows how Clark (Dean Cain) and Lois (Teri Hatcher) meet as colleagues at the Daily Planet and fall in love. The first season is especially strong in depicting their connection: Clark is attracted to Lois, while Lois initially chases after Superman. Lex Luthor also pursues Lois, who remains fixated on Superman, until she begins to develop feelings for Clark – feelings she resists. It’s a complex and tangled dynamic, offering a side of Superman we hadn’t seen explored much before.
Throughout the show’s run, Lois eventually discovered Clark’s secret identity, leading to an engagement and marriage—though it wasn’t easy! The TV wedding actually happened at the same time as Superman and Lois’s wedding in the comic books. Even with all the Superman action, the series always kept their relationship central. After four seasons, the show ended in 1997. Clark Kent didn’t stay off television for long, returning in 2001 with Smallville on The WB, but this time the story focused on his teenage years, and we didn’t see Lois for a while.
Nearly 30 Years Later, Lois & Clark Remains Unique

Even after almost 30 years, Lois & Clark stands out because it uniquely focused on the romantic relationship between Lois Lane and Clark Kent. While Superman & Lois touched on similar themes, it broadened its scope to include more action, family dynamics, and a Superman already established as a husband and father. Even in recent Superman movies, his connection with Lois is just one part of a larger story, and we usually meet them after they’ve already begun their relationship. Lois & Clark truly offered something different for live-action Superman – a dedicated exploration of their love that culminated in them starting a family 29 years ago.
