In about two days, 2K Games will permanently shut down one of their 2023 titles. 2K is a well-known publisher responsible for popular franchises like Borderlands, BioShock, Mafia, XCOM, and Civilization. However, they’re most famous for their sports games, which have consistently been popular and released yearly for consistent revenue. While EA is particularly known for this practice, 2K also does it frequently, and their NBA 2K series is a prime example.
A major issue with yearly sports game releases is that they quickly become outdated and are replaced by newer versions. This is compounded by expiring licenses that aren’t renewed, as a new game is usually already out by the time a license needs updating, making the older game irrelevant and unprofitable. As a result, sports games are often removed from digital stores surprisingly quickly. For example, NBA 2K24, released in 2023, will have its online features shut down on December 31st, just two years later, as the game servers will be taken offline.
No Longer Available to Purchase Either
Okay, so the game’s servers are still up for about 48 hours, which is good. But if you’re trying to buy it digitally, you’re out of luck – they took it off all the online stores back in October. You can still find physical copies if you hunt around, but those are getting rarer too since they stopped making them a while ago. Basically, time is running out to play!
Many fans agree that NBA 2K24 wasn’t a strong release in the series, as our review pointed out. A major issue was the increase in microtransactions, which were much more noticeable than in previous NBA 2K games and haven’t gotten much better. Because of this, it’s often considered one of the weakest entries in the series for current-generation consoles.
2K Games Not the Only Company Shutting Down Games Soon
Following 2K Games’ lead, EA is also shutting down servers for three of its games next month, including one developed by BioWare. Both companies have become known for these server closures in recent years, primarily due to the many sports games they produce.
