Video games began as simple, quick distractions – you could play for a few minutes with just a quarter. Today, games vary wildly in length, with some taking many hours to finish and others being surprisingly short. In fact, some games are intentionally designed to be brief, offering a concentrated burst of fun. We’ve explored a number of these shorter games and picked out three that are quick to complete but still enjoyable and engaging.
1) Star Fox 64

Star Fox 64, the second game in the series, is considered one of the best and essentially restarted the franchise after the original Star Fox on Super Nintendo. It’s a really enjoyable game that was a huge commercial and critical success. Despite being packed with action, it’s surprisingly brief – most players can finish the main story in around two hours, according to How Long To Beat. Completing all the optional missions and extras will take about four hours, but even then, the game remains relatively short for a popular Nintendo 64 title.
2) Metal Slug 3

The SNK Neo Geo was home to many fantastic games, and the Metal Slug series was one of the best. Metal Slug 3 is considered a standout title, and it’s surprisingly quick to complete. As the fourth game in the series, it features five stages, with the last one being significantly longer than the rest. You can finish the main story in around 90 minutes, but completing everything the game has to offer will take about three hours.
3) PaRappa The Rapper

I absolutely adore PaRappa The Rapper! It’s a rhythm game, but unlike anything else out there – you actually rap along with the music! Some people even say it was the very first true rhythm game, which is pretty cool, even if it’s up for debate. Critics loved it, and so did I – it was good enough to get a sequel! It’s true the initial playthrough isn’t super long, maybe around 90 minutes, but it’s so much fun you’ll want to play it again and again. Plus, if you really want to unlock everything and see it all, you can easily spend another hour and a half with it, bringing the total playtime to around 2.5 hours.
