The popular film series The Matrix is getting a fifth installment, and fans are wondering which characters will be back. While it’s unclear if the main heroes, Neo and Trinity, will return, many hope to see them again. Beyond the central pair, three other characters are essential for the next battle against the Machines.
For the first time, someone other than the Wachowskis will be leading a Matrix movie. Warner Bros. has chosen Drew Goddard, known for Cloverfield, to write and direct the next installment. It’s unclear whether the new film will continue the story from The Matrix Resurrections or start fresh, but three key characters really need to return to make the sequel feel complete.
3) Morpheus

Morpheus is crucial to the story because he’s the one who first shows Neo the truth about the war against the Machines. He was a central character in the original Matrix trilogy, and even though he died in a video game, he returned in The Matrix Resurrections. This version of Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is different – he was created as a program by Neo himself. Bugs then helps him break free and join the fight against the Machines.
The way the original Morpheus character died felt abrupt and unsatisfying, especially since The Matrix Resurrections seemed to prioritize keeping a video game spin-off connected to the main story. The next Matrix film, The Matrix 5, needs to address what happened with Morpheus, and it’s a good chance to finally make sense of this odd plotline.
2) Niobe

Jada Pinkett Smith reprises her role as Niobe in The Matrix Resurrections, but this time with a much larger part. Her character is now a leader of Io, the human civilization. If a fifth Matrix movie happens after Resurrections, Io will likely be central to the plot, since the old city of Zion is gone. It wouldn’t make sense to feature Io without Niobe, so her leadership should be included even if Neo and Trinity aren’t involved.
1) Agent Smith

Agent Smith is the most famous villain in The Matrix, so it would be surprising if he didn’t appear in The Matrix 5. His purpose is to keep the Matrix stable, meaning he’d naturally be the first to respond if the film takes place within the program. The only reason not to include a version of Agent Smith would be if the new movie doesn’t happen inside the Matrix, but Warner Bros. likely understands that wouldn’t make sense.
