Satoru Gojo is a major reason why Jujutsu Kaisen became so popular worldwide, especially after the anime came out. Viewers quickly fell in love with his laid-back personality and incredible strength. However, behind his cheerful exterior, Gojo carries a deep pain and responsibility.
During the Shibuya Incident Arc, Gojo was cleverly tricked and trapped inside the Prison Realm. While he was exhausted and the enemy exploited his relationship with a deceased friend, this doesn’t excuse his carelessness. Ultimately, the villain succeeded in sealing him away, throwing the world of Jujutsu into turmoil without its most powerful sorcerer. Fans anticipated his return for years, but the story continued without him throughout the Culling Game, which became the longest arc in the series.
Chapter 221, released on April 23, 2023, featured a long-awaited character return and is considered a high point in the story. Immediately after, Ryomen Sukuna challenged Gojo to a fight, confidently predicting his own victory. Gojo’s dismissive reply, “Nah, I’d win,” has become one of his most famous lines. Although Gojo ultimately lost to Sukuna, his sacrifice created an opportunity for other sorcerers to defeat the villain and restore peace.
How Does Gojo Get Unsealed in The Jujutsu Kaisen Manga?

Despite being gone for years from the story’s perspective, only twenty days had passed for Gojo. He always had faith his students would rescue him, and they succeeded quickly, overcoming numerous challenges. Originally, he could have been freed using either the Inverted Spear of Heaven, once wielded by Toji Fushiguro, or Miguel’s Black Rope. However, Gojo had destroyed both of those items, leaving the back of the Prison Realm – entrusted to the sorcerers by Master Tengen – as the only remaining way to release him.
Releasing Gojo from his confinement would have been impossible without Hana Kurusu and her unique ability, Jacob’s Ladder, which broke through the barrier surrounding him. Kurusu appeared during the Culling Game, and she’s able to share her body with Angel, a very old and powerful sorcerer. To further ensure Gojo remained trapped, Kenjaku hid the Prison Realm containing him in the deepest part of the Japan Trench—over 8,000 meters underwater—and placed a cursed spirit there as a guard. He intended the immense pressure at that depth to kill Gojo if he ever escaped.
When the sorcerers found a way into the barrier, Gojo was instantly freed from the Prison Realm. Kenjaku hadn’t anticipated this and feared for his life. But before Gojo could confront Kenjaku, Sukuna stepped in, demanding a fight. This clash between the two strongest sorcerers began in chapter 221 and is already being hailed as the most incredible battle in recent Shonen manga.
