Fans said goodbye to the My Hero Academia anime last December, nine years after it first aired. The series concluded a little over a year after the manga ended, showing the aftermath of the huge Final War. The heroes are left with lasting wounds, both physical and emotional, as they work to rebuild the country. While the main story is finished, the franchise remains popular and continues with spin-offs and video games. A special episode, My Hero Academia: More, recently adapted an extra chapter from the manga, taking place eight years after the war. With the franchise more popular than ever, Netflix is now streaming all of the My Hero Academia movies. These films have often been added and removed from Netflix due to licensing, but My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission, originally released in 2021, will be available on the platform starting June 1st, according to What’s on Netflix. The movie can also be found on Crunchyroll and Prime Video.
What Happens in My Hero Academia: World Heroes‘ Mission?
The movie was released while the anime’s fifth season was still on TV, fitting into the story arc focused on the Endeavor Agency, roughly halfway through Season 5. This means the events of the film happen just before the students begin their winter work-study experiences and before the major conflict known as the Paranormal Liberation War begins. The movie tells a separate story that doesn’t follow the main anime plot, centering around a group named Humarise who believe people with superpowers should be eliminated.
A dangerous weapon has been developed that makes people with special abilities lose control, ultimately leading to their deaths. Following a top hero named Endeavor across the nation of Otheon, Deku, Bakugo, and Shoto become entangled in a situation where Deku is wrongly accused of a crime. While on the run, he meets Rody Soul, who becomes a helpful ally, though he’s hiding secrets of his own.
Although Kohei Horikoshi, the author of the original manga, didn’t write the screenplay for the movie, he was heavily involved in its creation. Interestingly, a character named Rody, who debuted in the film, later became officially part of the manga’s story, appearing briefly when everyone was supporting Deku during his battle with All For One.
What’s Next For My Hero Academia?
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the anime has some great things planned for fans, starting with a brand new episode that serves as the series’ true finale. The special episode launched on Crunchyroll on May 2nd, 2026, and jumps forward eight years to show the U.A. students now working as Japan’s leading professional heroes.
A new website has been launched to share updates about the anniversary celebrations for the anime series. As part of these celebrations, a new anime short called “I am a hero too” will be released, following Eri’s life after the war. The short will explore her dream of becoming a singer, which was inspired by Class 1-A’s performance at the school festival. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date or trailer available.
