Cancelled Shonen Jump Series Unveils New Update Ahead of Anime Debut

After nearly a decade, the manga Black Torch, a classic from Shonen Jump, is getting a new anime adaptation this year. Created by Tsuyoshi Takaki, who also created Heart Gear and Rose Guns Days Sorrowful Cross Knife, Black Torch was originally published in Shueisha’s Jump SQ magazine from 2016 to 2018. The animation is being handled by 100studio, established in 2018, and will be directed by Kei Kamabaki, who previously directed Quality Assurance in Another World. The anime is scheduled to premiere in July 2026 as part of the summer lineup, though specific details about the release date and number of episodes are still to come. Based on the length of the manga, it’s expected to be a short, single-season series, unless the studio adds extra content. Black Torch is known for its distinctive supernatural elements, exciting action, and surprisingly well-developed characters, despite its relatively short run. As 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the manga, the new trailer is generating excitement. Crunchyroll will stream the anime in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS. While a dubbed version hasn’t been confirmed, it will be available with subtitles in six languages.

What Is Black Torch About?

Jiro Azuma is a 17-year-old who can talk to animals, but this ability has made him an outcast. He attempts to live a quiet life with his grandfather, using his gift to help animals in need. However, Jiro constantly finds himself in trouble, much to the frustration of his grandfather, who hopes he’ll make something of himself and uphold the family’s reputation.

The Azuma family has a long history as a clan of ninja, and Jiro, as a family member, always stood out. Everything changes when he rescues a black cat named Rago. Jiro soon discovers Rago isn’t a normal animal – he’s a powerful spirit, a mononoke, who has been battling humanity for centuries. Rago is being hunted by others of his kind, who want him to join their plans to harm people.

I watched as Jiro bravely jumped in to help Rago when he was attacked again, but sadly, Jiro was seriously wounded in the process. It was heartbreaking. Then, Rago used his own strength to save Jiro. After recovering, Jiro set out on a quest to confront dangerous, rampaging mononoke.
