We can expect to see more video games turned into movies and TV shows, and the classic game Broken Sword is next in line. After thirty years, the first adaptation of the series is finally being made.
According to reports, a movie based on the popular game Broken Sword is in the works. The game’s developer, Revolution Software, is partnering with production company Story Kitchen to bring the story to the big screen. Evan Spiliotopoulos, who wrote the screenplay for Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, is writing the script. Story Kitchen is also known for the Sonic the Hedgehog films and is currently working on another video game adaptation for Amazon.
Broken Sword Finally Moves Into a New Medium
According to Story Kitchen’s founders, Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg, the Broken Sword series is rare in that it has consistently maintained high quality, appealed to intelligent players, and built a dedicated fanbase. They emphasized that their goal isn’t simply to make a movie based on a game, but to evolve a world that’s been developed over thirty years into a new format, and they’re collaborating closely with the original creators to do so.
Charles Cecil, founder and CEO of Revolution Software, and producer Noirin Carmody, shared that Story Kitchen demonstrated a genuine love for the Broken Sword series from the start, which is something they don’t often see. Their discussions have focused on staying true to the essence of Broken Sword, rather than simply changing its appearance. Cecil expressed his excitement about collaborating with Story Kitchen and Evan.
The adventure began in 1996 with Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars. This game introduced players to George Stobbart, an American lawyer, and Nico Collard, a French journalist, who team up to solve intriguing historical mysteries. The series is known for its witty humor and challenging puzzles, taking players on a global journey to uncover ancient secrets and expose hidden groups. Gameplay involves a lot of interaction with quirky characters and collecting unusual objects to decipher clues and reveal the truth.
The Broken Sword Games Are Still Going Strong
The original game was followed by four sequels: Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror (1997), Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon (2003), Broken Sword: The Angel of Death (2006), and Broken Sword 5: The Serpent’s Curse (2013). The fifth game was made possible thanks to a crowdfunding campaign and the support of dedicated fans. This crowdfunding approach was also used successfully for Smoking Mirror Reforged, a remake of the second game, which raised nearly $1 million – significantly more than its initial $68,000 goal.
Fans have wanted to see a movie based on the games for years. Now, after three decades since the games first came out, a film adaptation is finally gaining momentum. The project is still in the beginning stages, so a release date and cast haven’t been announced yet.
