Throughout the three seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, each Ranger had their chance to be a hero, and Zack was certainly one of them. He always approached battles with a fun attitude, but he could get serious when needed. This happened in an episode that aired 31 years ago, giving Zack a starring role and a surprising new ability.
Thirty-one years ago, the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ended with its 60th episode, “An Oyster Stew.” The episode focuses on Zack, exploring his life both as a person and as a Power Ranger. During a battle with the Oysterizer, Tommy temporarily gives Zack his Dragon Shield to help him recover and gain strength. Zack uses this boost to defeat the Oysterizer, knocking him into the water and ultimately saving Tommy. You can watch the entire episode below.
The Dragon Shield Is Mostly a Green Ranger Trademark, But He’s Not The Only One To Wear It
Though several Power Rangers have used the Dragon Shield throughout Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, it’s most famously linked to the Green Ranger. The shield was originally part of the Green Ranger’s gear and abilities, but Tommy, the Green Ranger, could also lend its power to others when needed.
This occurred a couple of times during Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, including when Tommy lost his Green Ranger abilities. As a result, Tommy passed his Power Coin, Dragon Shield, and Dragon Dagger to Jason, which immediately made Jason an even stronger Ranger. Having the Dragon Dagger allowed the Rangers to summon the Dragonzord, even though Tommy was no longer functioning as the Green Ranger.
Okay, so there’s this part in the show where almost everyone in Angel Grove gets frozen – seriously, everyone! But Zack and Tommy are still up and fighting this new bad guy, the Oysterizer. They’re having a tough time, though, because the Oysterizer is shooting this nasty acid gel, and unfortunately, Zack gets hit directly with it. It was a pretty intense moment!
To give Tommy a chance to recover and give him an advantage, Tommy passes the Dragon Shield to Zack. Unfortunately, the Oysterizer immediately hits Tommy with a powerful blast. This leaves Zack, now with the upgraded Dragon Shield, to defeat the Oysterizer, ultimately knocking him into the water. Though Zack didn’t have the shield for long, it was exciting to see him wielding it and temporarily boost one of the most popular Rangers.
