Today marks the 31st anniversary of what many consider the greatest Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons, and it also features the best segment in the show’s entire history. Since its second season, The Simpsons has become known for its annual Halloween specials, which are separate from the show’s normal storylines. These episodes are anthologies, presenting three different stories inspired by various horror sources, often referencing classic movies, TV shows, and pop culture. However, one particular segment truly stands out as a perfect example of what these specials can be.
Today marks the 31st anniversary of The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror V, which first aired on FOX on October 30, 1994, as part of the show’s sixth season. This Halloween special included three segments: “The Shinning,” “Time and Punishment,” and “Nightmare Cafeteria.” Many fans consider it the best Treehouse of Horror episode ever, with its diverse horror themes, and “The Shinning” remains a particularly beloved segment.
“The Shinning” Is Peak Treehouse of Horror
The episode “The Shinning” starts Treehouse of Horror V by playfully reimagining Stephen King’s The Shining and the famous Stanley Kubrick film it inspired. Looking back, it’s amazing how many jokes they pack into just ten minutes! The story begins with Mr. Burns hiring Homer to look after his winter lodge, but he cruelly cuts off the cable and removes all the beer. This has apparently caused trouble – and even murders – at the lodge before, but Mr. Burns doesn’t seem to be concerned.
This episode is full of nods to the original movie, but brilliantly maintains the suspense while being incredibly funny. Homer’s descent into madness without his usual comforts – beer and TV – feels perfectly natural, and his deal with ghostly Moe to get a drink surprisingly justifies even the most outrageous behavior. Meanwhile, Bart’s new psychic power, cleverly dubbed “The Shinning,” is a playful way to avoid legal trouble, making the whole segment consistently enjoyable from start to finish.
Treehouse of Horror V Keeps Up the Hot Streak All the Way Through

The opening segment of ‘The Shinning’ is widely considered one of the best in Treehouse of Horror history because it hits all the right notes. It’s a clever and faithful take on the original story and movie, packed with hilarious jokes, and genuinely creepy – especially when Homer kills Groundskeeper Willie. What makes it even better is that it’s followed by two other incredibly popular and well-regarded Treehouse of Horror segments, solidifying its place as a standout opener.
“Time and Punishment” was the most science fiction-focused segment fans had seen up to that point, and it’s full of memorable moments, imagining a world run by Ned Flanders. The episode wraps up with “Nightmare Cafeteria,” considered one of the scariest segments ever. The final scene is incredibly graphic, showing the family turned inside out, but it’s also darkly funny, providing a perfect ending to a fantastic episode.
