4 Sequels To Sci-Fi Masterpieces That Are Currently in the Works

Science fiction is incredibly attractive to writers and filmmakers because it offers limitless possibilities. They can bring any idea to life, from distant galaxies to world-altering technologies. However, this freedom can be tricky. It’s easy for creative projects to become overly reliant on spectacle and lose their original depth. The Terminator series is a good example. It started as a thought-provoking story about our increasing reliance on technology, but eventually became a standard action franchise focused more on impressive visuals than meaningful themes.

Just because a sci-fi movie is a classic doesn’t mean its sequels have to fall apart like the later Terminator films. Some series know when to stop, and thankfully, we’re getting a few highly anticipated follow-ups to beloved sci-fi movies. Here are four of those sequels that are currently being made.

4) Avatar 4

Although Avatar 4 is technically a sequel to a groundbreaking sci-fi film, Avatar: Fire and Ash hasn’t been released yet. The long wait between Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water seems to have energized James Cameron, and he’s prepared to deliver another huge hit in 2025.

One of the most exciting things about Avatar 4 is that it will jump forward in time. Six years will pass, allowing Jake and Neytiri’s children to grow up and get ready for the upcoming conflict with both humans and other Na’vi who pose a threat. There’s also speculation that the movie might bring the Sully family to Earth, which would likely lead to a significant shift in the story.

3) Dune: Part Three

Dune: Part Two was a huge hit around the world, and fans loved Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Paul Atreides. After discovering the truth about his father’s death, Paul was forced to take control of his own destiny. Now, heading into Dune: Part Three, Paul is on a dangerous course that will likely transform the entire galaxy.

Okay, huge news for sci-fi fans! I’m hearing that the core cast is reuniting for Dune: Part Three, slated to arrive in theaters on December 18th, 2026. But it’s not just the familiar faces returning – we’re getting some exciting additions. Robert Pattinson is joining the fray as Scytale, a fascinating character from the Tleilaxu, and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke will be playing Paul Atreides’ twin children. It sounds like director Denis Villeneuve is really expanding the universe, and I, for one, am thrilled!

2) Edge of Tomorrow 2

YouTube is full of trailers for sequels that will never happen, like a fourth Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire or another Dark Knight film. But Edge of Tomorrow 2 takes the cake – it’s been stuck in development for over ten years and doesn’t seem likely to ever be made.

In the movie starring Tom Cruise, his character gets stuck repeating the same day after coming into contact with alien blood. Although the film Edge of Tomorrow doesn’t directly lead into a sequel, Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie are interested in making another one. According to reports, filming is expected to begin in 2026, and Emily Blunt is also planned to return.

1) I Am Legend 2

Will Smith is a major star in science fiction, known for films like Independence Day and Men in Black. However, many consider I Am Legend to be his best work in the genre. The movie follows Robert Neville, played by Smith, as he tries to develop a cure and save humanity after a virus transforms most of the population into vampire-like beings.

Although Will Smith’s character, Neville, seemingly died in the original movie, he’ll be back for a sequel that recognizes the different ending seen in some versions. Michael B. Jordan will also star, but he won’t be playing Neville’s son, leaving the story open to explore other exciting directions.
