Netflix has quickly become a major player in animation, consistently releasing popular original films and TV shows. Movies like Kpop Demon Hunters and Swapped are attracting audiences comparable to their live-action counterparts, and animated series such as Big Mouth, Bojack Horseman, Blue Eye Samurai, and Castlevania have enjoyed multiple seasons. However, not all of Netflix’s animated originals have been successful, and one series that debuted four years ago remains one of the most debated and controversial shows the platform has ever released.
Netflix released the first season of Dead End: Paranormal Park on June 16th, launching a supernatural series about Barney and Norma, who work at a haunted amusement park. Their adventures included Barney’s pug, Pugsley, and a thousand-year-old demon named Courtney. The show quickly became controversial, as Barney was portrayed as a gay transgender teenager using his job to cope with family problems. Although the exact reasons for the show’s cancellation after two seasons are unknown, many viewers believe the sensitive subject matter and resulting online backlash from prominent figures played a significant role.
A Dead End Indeed
Elon Musk, who runs Tesla, X, and SpaceX, asked people online to stop subscribing to Netflix, saying it was for the sake of their children. This came after criticism of the show Dead End: Paranormal Park, which led to the creator, Hamish Steele, receiving hateful emails containing homophobic and antisemitic messages. Although Netflix cancelled the show after two seasons, the story continued in a three-part graphic novel series called DeadEndia, giving fans a complete ending for the character Barney. While these graphic novels likely won’t be made into an animated series, they do offer closure for those who enjoyed Dead End.
After the cancellation of Dead End: Paranormal Park in 2023, creator Hamish Steele shared the sad news with fans on social media. He explained he’d been hoping for a way to save the show, but unfortunately, it wasn’t possible. Steele revealed that a writers room had already begun work on Season 3, with scripts, designs, and outlines completed, all with the intention of giving the characters a satisfying conclusion. However, those in charge have decided against continuing the series.
Steele shared that they feel fortunate to have navigated the challenges of recent years. They expressed deep appreciation for Netflix’s support in creating the show and allowing them creative freedom. They’re incredibly proud of the twenty episodes they produced, as well as their entire team. Finally, Steele thanked the fans for all their amazing contributions – from fan art and cosplay to stories, reactions, and TikTok videos – saying every interaction has been wonderful.
